The same things that make an interior feel beautiful; layers, pattern, color, lighting, flowers, collected pieces… these things work outside, too.

Once I stopped thinking ‘outdoor space’ and started thinking ‘outdoor room,’ this space started to feel more warm and welcoming, and like a true extension of our home.

Elements like climbing vines, checkerboard flooring, weathered planters, striped cushions, layered linens, colorful glassware, and flowers from the garden all add dimension and warmth to a space that would otherwise feel cold and utilitarian.

I also stopped shopping for exclusively “outdoor entertaining” items and started looking more for things that were colorful, patterned… things that would bring a cheery vibe and a sense of cheer to the patio for the summer season.

If you could add or change one thing to your outdoor space, what would it be?

Do you have any to add? Or do any of these make you tweak a little when you see them? I think the one that bugs me the most is the curtains being too low or being too short. Or maybe the rugs being too small… Or maybe the lightbulbs being too cool…
Ok, maybe it’s all of it! 😂

Ok, it did take like 2 years straight of DIYing and we’re still at it, but it’s been WORTH IT 👏👏
The project we’ve been working on these last few weeks is redoing our planter beds, which I gave a brief sneak peek at in this reel. Follow along for the full reveal and all the details on how we made these beautiful custom stone beds.
What should we do next….Outdoor shower (we live just a couple of blocks from the beach and we and the dog are constantly coming back very sandy), or redo our front walkway (which is currently quite scary).

Mornings used to look like this: coffee, emails… same routine, same view.
But I realized I was missing the best part of my own backyard…
Now it feels like I have a front row seat to nature—every little detail, every visitor I would’ve never noticed before.
The Metal 2 makes it so easy to slow down and actually see what’s happening right outside your window, and I love how it blends right into the garden instead of taking away from it.
If you’ve been wanting to feel a little more connected to your outdoor space, this is such a simple way to do it. Head to my stories for a link and to hear more about and the Metal 2, and use code katepearce for 10% off!

A point could be made that I DID buy this house in the “before” condition and I have yet to sell it in the “after” (for the record, I’m not trying to)…
But also, IDGAF. This is my house so I’m going to make it feel like my house. Because it’s where I live right now, not where some theoretical future buyer might live.
And besides, I’d rather someone with a little imagination buy this historic home than someone who wants to whitewash and modernize the soul out of it.
What say you? Do you think about future buyers when renovating and decorating your home?

Sick day over here for my girl, so enjoying the garden views from inside. Can’t wait to show you all the progress we’re making outside though! I think this weekend we’ll be ready to show you the first peeks. 👀
Have you been obsessing over your garden/yard/outdoors lately too?

The best part is, my kid drew this wallpaper with her own two hands, and then we had it printed. So, it is literally the room that she dreamed up!
And no, not the little one shown here😂. It was done by my older daughter and she was 12 when she did it.
Cheers to allowing your kids imaginations run wild because Picasso was right…kids really are the best artists.

We’ve been working on this room on and off for over a year now, and finally just added this gorgeous scalloped rug from x because every bedroom needs a rug underfoot.

This block print is so fun and I love the pattern mix it adds to this space. I’m sharing more details about it in my stories today, and I have the rug linked on my stories, LTK + ShopMy.

Do you have a rug in your bedroom? I firmly believe you need to step onto a soft rug like this one when you get out of bed in the morning.

Do you agree?

The goal was to add more functionality and storage, all while dialing back the clock a bit and adding more period charm (while still allowing the kitchen to feel modern).
One thing a lot of people don’t keep in mind when renovating is honoring the architecture and period character of your home. I think it would be so fun to do an ultra-modern kitchen one day, but this wasn’t the right home for one.
But dialing back the clock doesn’t have to mean losing all modern amenities or modern aesthetics…it’s just about mixing those things into your spaces in a way that feels like your space is modernized, but still belongs in your home.
Do you think about the period and style in which your home was built while renovating and/or decorating?
