As I was pouring a batch of candles for our last market, I thought about a chapter in a book I just finished. The book, Everyday Dharma, is about implementing strategies into your life so you can find joy in all you do. Towards the end, the author notes a tendency for people to hesitate when they’re thinking about taking big leaps due to fear. In not taking action, they could be seriously missing out.
When I started Blossom Bunny, I had no clue what I was doing—but I’m so glad that I did it. I’d have missed out on so much otherwise. I have a creative energy that rarely gets to play as someone who spent so long preparing for law school. And my peers were so competitive that I only saw a creative hobby as worthwhile if it could help me gain career experience. The deep need to make things, coupled with justifying doing something I love by being an entrepreneur, made Blossom Bunny happen. I’m so glad that I didn’t let my hesitation hold me back, although I felt hesitation heavily at times.
Without this business I’d not have connected with an incredible community of vegan makers and activists in Central NJ and beyond. I’d have lost out on a wealth of learning experiences that helped me truly understand what it means to run a small business. And in time, I learned that there’s nothing wrong with dedicating energy to creative pursuits if they make you happy and serve no other purpose. I can still make candles of my own. Maybe I can get into special effects makeup again like I did in high school. Maybe I’ll finally find the discipline to learn how to play an instrument—I don’t know. But I do know that I won’t beat myself up simply for wanting to be expressive.
I hope this post helps someone take a leap and not think too much about it—whether it’s a relationship, a career move, or something else. Take action and let the courage follow. If you fail, you will still learn. And know that anything you do for the sole purpose of bringing yourself joy is not a waste of time. 🤍
