1788 Period 1 Cent Massachusetts NGC certified VF25 BN. A really cool piece of early American coinage and definitely something you don’t come across every day!
The 1788 Massachusetts 1 Cent was one of the first coins authorized and issued by an American state after independence. Massachusetts began producing its own copper coinage in 1787–1788, before the federal government established a national mint.
These coins were made during a time when there was still a shortage of reliable circulating coinage in the newly formed United States, making state issued coins an important part of everyday commerce.

It’s amazing to hold these little pieces of Jefferson’s past and think about them circulating through town over 160 years ago. Finding local items like these is what makes collecting so much fun, and I’m always excited to add another piece of Jefferson history to the display .

Serial number 17766771 reads the same forwards and backwards, making it a neat collectible and a fitting way to start the holiday weekend.

Here’s a 1806 Draped Bust Half Dollar, Pointed 6, Stems variety (Overton-114).

It’s in an NGC Fine Details holder with a repaired designation, likely due to old rim dings that were flattened out. Even so, it has honest, even wear and plenty of character. Early Bust halves are rarely perfect, and this is still a fantastic piece of early U.S. coinage with a great look.

Sometimes the history and originality matter more than what’s on the slab.

You never know what’s gonna walk through the door on any given day and sometimes it’s just another old jar to dig through. Most of the time you’re sorting wheat cents, Buffalo nickels, some 90% silver, and the usual bicentennial quarters.

But every now and then… it’s different.

This 1849-O Seated Liberty quarter showed up mixed in with a jar of low-grade better dates. The kind of coin that makes you stop and take a second look. Even better its exact mintage is unknown, since it was lumped in with the 1850-O total of 412,000 struck across both years.

April 13, 1976 Americans lined up at their local banks to get freshly issued Bicentennial $2 notes, celebrating the nation’s 200th anniversary. Many then took those crisp new bills straight to the post office to have them officially stamped and canceled, creating a unique piece of history from that day.

50 years later… I decided to take it one step further.

Instead of using a new note, I tracked down an original 1976 $2 bill that had already been stamped, and brought it back to the post office to be canceled again.

Two cancels.
One from 1976… and one from yesterday April 13th 2026
