This client was returning to Tulsa after living in Colorado for some years. I believe our first meeting was late August. She told me she would love the house to be "company" ready by October 1.

She wanted new hardwood floors in the office and two bedrooms, to tile a closet and repaint the interior completely. This I felt pretty confident I could make happen.

Then she said she needed new living room furniture and a rug. Hard stop. Unless we happened across the perfect things, in stock, that wasn't going to be possible. Still, we got to work.

The hardwood floors, new tile and interior repaint were all completed in the following 30 days.

We did have to order furniture though. We found swivel chairs she liked at North Carolina Furniture Mart. We ordered them clad in a Banks performance fabric in a deep teal velvet.

The sectional option she liked was a textured navy top grain leather. We added custom pillows in a lush contemporary floral.

We ordered a 48 x 48 square cocktail ottoman in a small print multi-tonal fabric to pull it all together.

The wool rug from Masland feels rich and plush underfoot and will last years and years.
The client loves peacock blues. I think we met the challenge. Her furniture arrived before Thanksgiving and the rug shortly thereafter.

Each client comes with their own special talents. Julie's personality is "I can do it". That coupled with a C.P.A.'s lightening fast math skills and, well.... stand back.

I use a fair amount of basic math in my business, but I learned early on that by the time I got the calculator fired up, she had the answer.

Buying an insanely well-priced, (75% off) Bernhardt Dining Table in Dallas was a real coup, getting it home, however, was another matter. Yes, we could have used a traditional shipping method, but that would eat into the savings.
There was a solid two hour window of chaos: unsuccessful U-Haul rentals, hitch that didn't fit, brake lights that refused to cooperate.
Finally we hit on UShip/Shipley which has driver's bidding on your load.
Even after paying the trucking firm, she still netted 60% off that table. Worth the anguish? You bet!

I usually do a good bit of diy "craft type" work on each job, or I send things to the workroom. Not this time.

Julie was up for painting "Anything."
Change the color on the fireplace screen✅️
Little ball finial needs an update. ✅️
Not enough gold on the foyer light? Paint!✅️
Side table gold doesn't match the picture frame above? Paint it!✅️

Trim on "Everything". She became an expert with fabric glue. Tape trim on stools under consoles, braid on lampshades.✅️

The ceramic flower installation? I had the size and pattern in mind and began creating an organic, artistic interpretation.
The C.P.A./math brain had a different vision. 😉
There were several iterations. A true exercise in collaboration, listening/and learning. In the end we were both thrilled with the result.

My all-time favorite moment....Julie asked if she could blow insulation inside the brass drum cocktail table. Genius idea! Practical and simple.
When the table arrived, she told me it had the distinct sound of a metal drum, no matter what was set on top of it.
After checking with the manufacturer, we were given the green light. The next time I was at the house, the drum was silent felt and noticeably more substantial.

There were more hair-brained schemes from Lucy and Ethel, but you get the idea.😘

The key to elevating a space is adding unexpected and delightful touches through the use of color, texture and pattern. I recently featured a ceramic flower wall installation that fits that category.

The primary bath is loaded with touches. Look closely at the hardware. It's smoked glass and satin gold. Feels SO good in your hand!
The children playing sculpture in gold leaf, the circular ocean art above, with a shiny resin finish adds a "wet" look to the painting. A pair of geometric print ceramic lamps with blue embroidered trim finish the space.

The respite area features a peaceful framed
art piece of a woman with an upholstered, white woven bench beneath. A long blue bolster with tape trim and fringe up tge ante and a tall Fiddle Leaf Fig tree adds greenery and life.

The handwoven rattan bench, in the bedroom, started out its life in its natural state. A blue semi gloss paint, a cushion clad in a blue pebbled chenille fabric and a set of four scalloped edge blue floral pillows made this an attractive space to put on your shoes.

Powder bath decor is fun, fun, fun to do. Every client I have worked with will let the powder bath have some "WOW".

We found this big monocromatic blue floral wallpaper on Etsy. The glam crystal vanity lights, rope mirror, fluffy pale blue flowers and lamp with tri-color blue rope cord and navy ceramic flower put the perfect final touches on this happy little place.

The living room with insets on each side of the limestone fireplace called for symmetry, but we used a mirroring effect instead of being exactly the same. The companion original paintings from the fabulous Angela Finch Moore, top off the space.

A warm, hammered golden drum table takes center stage flanked by HF Custom pale blue woven swivel chairs with elegant wood trim, all resting on a sculpted, multi-hued blue wool rug.

This white marble counter area just needed a bit of color and whimsy. I love to add the warmth of a lamp to a kitchen landscape.

Color drenching is having a moment. Paint every surface in the room.....walls, ceiling, doors one color, only differentiated by the sheen. In this case Sherwin Williams Denim is the background of this lovely primary bedroom.

Continuing our blue/taupe theme, we had a custom king bed made in a Queen Anne style. The bedding offers playful geometric, solid and florals cohesively with a tape trim framing the comforter.

Over the bed a pair of egrets are flanked by seaglass art contributing to the serenity of the space. At the windows are Stout Fabric Delft blue roman shades and pinch pleat panels in a small print from Fabricut.

Overhead a capiz shell chandelier adds an elegant touch and bedside, a pale blue ceramic ginger jar lamp with drum shade sits on a white, contemporary, fluted night stand with gold pulls.

I find it interesting how colors, patterns, and textures find their way into a home. We begin by looking at paint colors and fabrics to see what draws the client's attention.

Early on, Julie gravitated toward taupe, navy, and a lighter grey/blue. Once we selected our base colors, we looked for fabrics in those hues. I did a mood board for her, which I've featured before - a grouping of paint colors, fabrics, furniture finishes, hardware, etc. to give the client a visual of what to expect.

Building a house is a months-long process, and over that time, an evolution occurs as we begin to see the project moving in a direction. Some things we initially thought would work did, while others moved in different directions.

The fabric shown here was an early introduction, and she continued to gravitate toward the blue leafy embroidery. Julie's home backs onto a green space with a pond, and she wanted to enjoy that view.

We settled on knife-edge Roman shades on a Somfy controller. Somfy, a French company, is a leader in manufacturing home automation products. Their five-channel remote enables up to five products to move simultaneously.

I love the partnership that develops integrating thoughtful design elements and technology to make the client's life easier and more beautiful!😊

I've wanted to do a ceramic wall installation for some time. I had admired them in commercial settings. There is a stunning one at St. Francis Hospital. I've seen them in hotels. They are available for residential use, but usually quite expensive.

I approached Julie Ward about this and she was game to let me. We found some reasonably-priced white ceramic flowers of varying sizes and shapes. After the 9th iteration, or so🤦‍♀️, I'd say we are happy with the results. The alabaster sconces really elevated this pleasing, textural display.

The tour continues of this new construction home. The entry leads to an open dining, kitchen area. The coffered/sidecar ceiling over the dining area is walnut-stained red oak, adding to the richness of the room.

The kitchen island cabinetry is painted in an pleasing Sherwin Williams Debonair, a medium blue-grey tone.

Custom bench-made, Sherrill Furniture dining chairs, clad in a raised blue velvet leaf pattern make for an eye catching design surrounding the Bernhardt dining table.

Underfoot is a Flokati rug, made of sheep wool. Flokati is a Greek name for a rug made entirely of wool. Typical sheepskin rugs use the hide as the backing. In Flokati rugs, a woven wool backing, makes it possible to be cleaned, even machine-washed.

Shades of a blue/taupe colorway, paired with a neutral warm white for the woodwork, is used throughout the home, providing a tranquil, serene, cohesive feel.

Follow me on a lovely house tour over the next few weeks. I have been working on this house for about a year. It sits in a most unusual, wide cul-de-sac with a picturesque pond on one side. Although it is in a neighborhood, it has a decidedly country house feel.
Just the beginning....

To Market, To Market to buy cool stuff! Julie Ward and her darling daughter, Lacey, accompanied me to Market in Dallas recently.

Julie had told me a trip to Market was a bucket list item for her. I'm honored to help bring a "wish" come true.

She saw the enormity of the campus. The main building is 16? stories with wings to two smaller multi story buildings. One can't see it all at once, but I think she came away with a good feel for the process.

We saw loads of new product in all categories....furniture, lighting, art, home accents and more. A kaleidoscope of colors and patterns and textures, oh my!

We found great buys. She ordered a custom Bernhardt sofa clad in a dreamy pleated navy blue velvet. She bought a Bernhardt dining table that retails for $2800. for $999. Less than 1/2 off.

I can't make this stuff up. You just never know what you are going to find in that giant treasure chest.

More photo's and the "rest of the story" to unfold in the coming weeks.😘

Painted furniture has been wildly popular for the last ten plus years. Giving a piece new life through paint is a good option.

This story, however, goes the other direction. My client, in her '70's, inherited this bedroom furniture from her grandmother. She remembers it, as a child, as always being white. She wanted to have it refinished to it's original state.

I tell client's refinishing case goods or upholstery, many times it's less expensive to just buy new. We know, though, that things made today aren't always the same quality.

There are situations where it makes sense to refinish. Heirloom pieces, like this, something with good bones, a quality original piece are all good reason's to invest in making something old, new again.

The refinisher says this set is from the 1930's or '40's. You never know when you start one of these projects, if it was painted because it wasn't good quality.

He called me really excited when he began stripping to report, it was black walnut. He said it was going to be gorgeous. He was correct. Happy client. Happy Susan!🥰
