When I was 36, I decided I wanted to specialize in custom new construction. I’d only done 1 at the time, most of our work was furnishings and renovations, but I fell in love with this type of project and wanted more. I said yes to every opportunity and learned and grew along the way. Today, 85% of our work is new construction, and we’ve worked on everything from villas (like this kitchen) to 10,000 square feet. I was so nervous to niche down, afraid I wouldn’t get leads for other types of projects (we do!). Go after what you really want in life, do the hard scary thing. I believe it makes life better.

You’ve been wanting to do it for a while now, but something has been holding you back. You’re afraid of making a mistake (expensive! Embarrassing!). You’re afraid of what you DON’T know. You have an eye, but are afraid of being judged, because what do you really know?

That was me 8 years ago. Reading book after book, pouring over Pinterest and Instagram and so afraid to take the next step.

Fast forward, I’ve started 3 interior design businesses, and now have a team of 4 with a growing client roster. We are working on larger and larger projects, and new construction is my passion and primary project type.

I had nothing when I started but a dream, and I believe you can do it too.

You see drywall. I see hope. Architectural plans, design, framing and mechanicals take a looong time. This is the part of the project when all that work and time start to pay off and you can see the shape of what something is going to be. We are moments away from some of my favorite parts: cabinet, countertop and tile install.

Not thinking about lighting soon enough. It goes in last, that means we have time, right? Nope. It’s one of the things we start planning for immediately.

There is nothing worse than feeling locked into a sconce placement you didn’t source for early enough, or, paying for changes after the fact that could have been thoughtfully considered early on.

Lighting is the decision most people make last. I think about it first.
In a new build especially, the fixture is almost secondary. What matters is where the light lands, how many sources you have, and whether each moment has the lighting it needs to feel just right.

Get the lighting plan right and every other decision gets easier.
