Are you ready to make a braided rug with roving from your own sheep or your stash? The Shepherds Rug and Letty will be teaching a 2-day workshop at MFF in August, Check it out!
Day 1 we'll be braiding all day and talking about color, breeds of wool sheep, and techniques.
Day 2 we'll be sewing with lots of tricks to make your rug perfect. If you're diligent you should be able to go home with a finished 2'x4' rug. All equipment except for the wool, will be included in the material kit. You are encouraged to bring your own roving, but some will be available from me or vendors.

Braided Rug Workshops
I'll be teaching a 2-day rug braiding class at Michigan Fiber Festival on August 12-13, 2026, in Allegan MI. You can bring your own roving or buy it at the class. Watch the MFF website for signup. 1st day will be for braiding, etc. 2nd day will be for sewing etc. You can finish a 2 x 3 foot rug. It will be fun!
And a 1-day rug braiding class at the Wisconsin Sheep and Wool Festival on September 4, 2026. Watch their website for signup. You can finish a chair pad while learning all the tips and techniques.

Ok, time for my favorite breed for making braided rugs - the Karakul! Karakul is very strong, lasts forever and felts in the blink of an eye. It comes in many color shades including the blackest of black. Definitely an heirloom type of long lasting rug. This one is a 'Butted' rug where ear color or color combination is braided separately, then sewn one one round at a time and the 2 ends are Butted together.

The Navajo Churro is definitely a rug wool. It felted quickly and solidly. A rug braided with NC will last forever, be sure to will it to one of your grandkids. This is one to put at the front door or kitchen sink. All natural colors in a spiral braid, again one color carried throughout the rug except for the dark frame.
