A lovely tribute to Sally Shaffer who did so much to nurture Kensington Antique Row. Her husband Joe and daughter Carrie are carrying the tradition on in style!
We lost my mom, Sally Shaffer, 5 years ago today. Since then - or at least since we were permitted to reopen due to Covid restrictions - my dad, Joe, and I have continued to work to keep Sally Shaffer Antiques open and up to the standards that Sally always held. I think she would be happy about that and glad that Joe has a community on Antique Row in Kensington that knows, loves and supports him and us! Karlee’s Deli has even named a sandwich after him - go get yourself a Big Joe Club!
Sally opened her first shop, The Cranberry Box, in Antique Village, the first stall on the corner where M.O.B Vintage is now. I was two years old. The story I was always told was that when dad came home from work one day, mom shared she had signed a lease and was opening an antiques store. A few years later, the space we are currently in at 3742 opened up and she moved in there with two other dealers. A few years after that, Jill Rotter of Jill and Company moved into 3744 Howard Ave and they worked together to knock down the wall between the two shops and open up the space. Although they always maintained separate businesses, Jill and mom were dear friends and colleagues. Jill has continued to be a huge support to dad and me and has taught me a lot about being an antiques dealer!
I never had any intention of being an antiques dealer. Although I am at the shop weekly, I have a full time job as a psychotherapist with a private practice. I appreciated some of the furniture, quilts, crocks, folk art, etc we had in our house, but mostly I always wished we had new things! Over these past 5 years however, I have developed a deep love for real wood furniture, hand sewn quilts and embroidered tablecloths, heavy stoneware bowls and pitchers, and unique, vintage glassware, pottery, and other vessels that make for perfect planters! I have brought on someone to help who has now become a partner in both business and family matters! If you have not yet met Susanne Mount, please come by Thursdays - Sundays and introduce yourself. Susanne is helping us bring fun items and a welcoming spirit to Sally Shaffer Antiques and I am so, so grateful!
On this anniversary, I wanted to take a minute to remember Sally, my mom, and all that she was to Antique Row and all that it has been for my family. Thank you so much to all of you who have supported us and our business for almost 50 years. We are happy to still be here and look forward to new and exciting times at Sally Shaffer Antiques.
