I wanted to share my devotion from this morning!

In Matthew 7:3-5, Jesus talks about somebody trying to get a speck of sawdust out of his brother’s eye while a plank is sticking out of his own face.

Paul says something similar in Romans 2:1. When you pass judgment on somebody else, you condemn yourself because you do the same things.

So here’s where I’ve landed, and I’ll tell you up front it’s not a comfortable place to live.

When I feel a critique rising in me, I try to flip it around before it comes out of my mouth.

I’m not trying to let anybody off the hook. I just want to know whether I’ve earned the right to swing that particular standard at somebody else.

Then I ask myself this question: In what ways am I trying to serve myself instead of the people God has placed around me?

That question has cost me some things. It should.

You can serve yourself in the name of Jesus. You can build your own thing and call it a ministry. You can chase advancement and label it obedience. You can be the guy at the table with the strongest opinion about what’s wrong with the church and never once examine what’s wrong in you.

The whole time, it looks like faithfulness. That’s what makes it so hard to catch.

Some of you have been hurt by a church. Some of you are looking at a situation right now that needs to change, and your discernment about it is a gift.

I’m not asking you to stop seeing it.

I’m asking you to start with the plank in your own eye.
