Sometimes the hardware is meant to make a statement

Drapery hardware doesn’t always have to quietly blend into the background. Sometimes bold is exactly the look the client is after.

For this room, the black hardware and decorative finials were chosen to be seen. Against the neutral draperies, they add contrast and a strong decorative element that becomes part of the overall look of the room.

That’s one of the things I love about custom drapery hardware. It can be simple and understated, or it can be bold and decorative. The finish, finials, rings and other details all give us an opportunity to create the look that’s right for the room, and for the homeowner.

Sometimes the view is beautiful…but the sun has other plans

My client loves sitting in her living room and watching the cloud formations outside. Unfortunately, for several hours each day, the sun coming through these windows was so intense that she would have to leave the room.

The addition of sheer drapery panels gives her the flexibility she needed.

When the sun is intense, she can close the sheers to filter the sunlight and make the room much more comfortable, without making it feel dark. The view disappears for a little while, but she gets to stay and enjoy her living room.

When the sun moves on, the sheers open to frame that beautiful view.

And even beyond the practical side, look at what the texture of the sheer fabric adds to the room. It gives that entire wall another layer and makes the room feel finished, even when the panels are open.

Light control when she needs it. A beautiful view when she doesn’t. And a finishing touch all the time.

That’s the beauty of choosing a window treatment based on how you actually live in the room.

I believe the products I recommend to my clients should be products I’d choose for my own home

When it came time to choose the drapery hardware for my own bedroom, I knew I wanted French return rods. I love the clean, classic look and the way the rod simply returns to the wall without the need for a decorative finial.

The black finish gives just enough contrast against the blue walls while allowing the patterned draperies and lead-edge trim to get the attention.

Over the years, I’ve come to know which products I can rely on and have built relationships with vendors I trust. That gives me confidence when I recommend those products to my clients, and makes choosing them for my own home an easy decision.

Know your audience

A few years ago during our bi-annual girls’ beach week, we were playing a game one evening. One of my friends won, and when we asked how she did it, she simply said:

Know your audience

But that little phrase has stuck with me ever since.

And it certainly applies to the way I work with interior designers.

When I’m working with a designer, my role is different than when I’m working directly with a homeowner.

The designer already has a vision for the room. My job is to listen, understand that vision, and bring my window treatment expertise to the project.

Can we fabricate what you have in mind? What hardware will make it work? How much stack-back do we need? Is motorization the right choice? Will the proportions work with the windows and the room?

Then there are all those details behind the scenes, like measuring, ordering, fabrication, installation, and keeping everything moving.

It’s not about changing the designer’s vision. It’s about using my experience to help bring it to life.

“Know your audience. Know your role. And know how to be a good partner.”

That’s what a successful designer/workroom relationship is all about.

**Know your audience.**

A few years ago during our bi-annual girls’ beach week, we were playing a game one evening. When one of my friends won, we asked how she did it, she simply said:

**“Know your audience.”**

We laughed, but that little phrase has stuck with me ever since.

And the longer I’m in business, the more I realize just how true it is.

When I meet with a homeowner, my job isn’t to walk in and tell them what *I* would put on their windows. It’s to get to know them.

How do they use the room? What do they love? What drives them crazy about their windows now? Do they need privacy? Light control? Something beautiful to finish the room? Or all of the above?

Two homeowners can have the exact same windows and need completely different solutions.

Over the years, I’ve learned that knowing your products is important. Knowing your craft is important.

But knowing your audience?

That might just be one of the best pieces of advice I ever picked up during girls’ beach week. 😉
