Why Myrrh Tree Designs?
Growing up, when people would ask how to pronounce our last name, my dad would always say, "Myrrh, you know, like in the Bible, and Tree."
And so, as silly as that is, that has always stuck with me.
But so what? What's the significance of Myrrh? Why choose that to be a part of my brand?
Biblically, myrrh can be found all throughout the Bible. In the Old Testament, it was used as a perfume, anointing oil, and was even imbibed as a medicinal tonic. Liquid myrrh was a main ingredient in the anointing oil used to ceremonially prepare the priests, the instruments, the altar, and the Temple itself before sacrifices could be made.
However, when my dad referenced myrrh's usage in the Bible, most people would think of the three gifts of extreme value given to baby Jesus by the wise men.
The gold represented his kingship, the frankincense symbolized his priestly duty, and the myrrh represented his humanity - namely because myrrh suggests death and burial.
(Wow, this is a real buzz kill. Hang in there... it's going to get a little darker, and then I'm going to try to bring it back)
On the cross, Jesus was offered wine mixed with myrrh to help ease his suffering, which he refused. Finally, after the crucifixion, Jesus' body was taken down and wrapped in linens along with myrrh and aloes. The significance here is that, just like in the Old Testament, myrrh was used as part of the ritual of Holy Sacrifice. The final sacrifice.
Now, what does all of that mean for Myrrh Tree Designs?
Am I claiming that the things that I make are "Holy?"
Absolutely not.
Are they supposed to remind you of death? Ummm......... hopefully not???
But are they of great value?
There it is.
My desire is that the things I create can be received as a previous gift that people can cherish for the rest of their lives. My hope is that my creations bring joy, induce laughter, create conversation, or facilitate making memories. Whether it be a sign, a plaque, a piece of furniture, or whatever else, I pray that they let the receiver know how truly valuable they are and how much they are loved.
