Accent lighting is the layer most people skip and then wonder why their room looks flat in photos. It is the beam that catches the texture on a plaster wall. The small directional fixture that makes the art above the sofa look like it belongs in a gallery. The low-voltage fixture aimed at a plant in the corner that turns it from a decoration into a feature. Accent light is the layer that gives a room dimension: shadow and highlight instead of even, flat illumination. Once you start seeing it you cannot un-see it.
