This hand-colored 19th-century French engraving of La Chèvre and Le Bouc (the nanny goat and billy goat) has found its new home.

I loved the fine engraved detail, subtle hand coloring, and signs of age throughout the paper. The delicate blue-green ruled border and custom warm gilt frame made it an especially charming piece.

FRESHLY FOUND
This vintage Mexican pottery vase is hand-painted in warm, earthy shades of rust, ochre, brown, and cream, with bands of geometric decoration wrapping around.

At 10 1/2 inches tall, the rounded shape and narrow opening make it just right for a few branches or dried stems. And the palette feels especially good this time of year.

A morning thrift stop, with a few finds for Swell House and some tempting pieces left behind.

Come along for a little thrift or pass, including what caught my eye and why some noteworthy things didn’t come home with me. Sometimes it’s condition, sometimes it’s the project I know I won’t get around to, and sometimes the shop simply has enough lamps.

Which would you have picked up? And would you have gone back for the angels? I’m still thinking about those.

FRESHLY FOUND
This pair of hand-carved olive wood candlesticks combines tall, turned forms with open spiral carving and incised leaf details throughout. The warm wood and intricate carving give them a sculptural quality, while their 11-inch height adds interesting dimension to a mantel or table.

I especially like them with rich, dark tapers for fall.

Small antique tables might be some of the most useful pieces to collect. They tuck easily beside a sofa or bed, fill an otherwise awkward corner, and instantly bring a little history and character to a room.

This petite Victorian work table, circa 1870, is especially good, with beautifully figured walnut, two drawers, a fall-front storage compartment, turned legs on casters, and drop leaves that open to nearly double the depth of the tabletop.

A pair of vintage Andrea by Sadek wall hooks, cast in brass with sculptural folds that give dimension to each ribbon bow. A small hook extends below for hanging jewelry, keys, a hand towel, or other lightweight pieces.

FRESHLY FOUND
This antique English pitcher features Furnivals’ “Quail” pattern, with a detailed blue transferware scene of two quail tucked beneath flowering branches and foliage. Even the handle and scalloped rim get their own botanical detailing.

The pattern was registered in England in 1921, and the original Furnivals mark remains on the underside.

This miniature landscape packs an entire pastoral scene into just a couple of inches, with tiny trees, water, distant hills, and a blue sky rendered in oil. The deeply tiered gilt frame gives the little painting an especially substantial presence despite its scale.
