When planning a childcare space, sightlines should be part of the conversation from the beginning. Tall furniture, dividers, shelving, and room arrangements can all affect visibility.

The same is true for toddler rooms, Montessori environments, STEM-focused spaces, and classrooms designed for older preschoolers.

Furniture should reflect how children use the room, not simply what fits a standard classroom package. The right solution depends on the age group, activities, space, and daily routines.

Most of all, it should reflect what your program stands for.

Reception areas, offices, staff lounges, and administrative spaces are also part of the childcare environment.

Big thanks to Child Care Resource & Referral and Illinois Action for Children for a great weekend of connection.

Matt and Tony represented SB Custom Learning at the CCR&R Community Fall Fest in Joliet (perfect weather for it), while Connie and Jodi covered the Illinois Action for Children Provider Summit.

It was also great meeting some of the daycare providers on-site at the Fall Fest, including Direct Thy Path Daycare, Learn with Me Daycare, Kiddie Academy of Plainfield and Romeoville, Velia's Sunshine Daycare Pre-K, Little Learnings of Crest Hill, and Easterseals Joliet Region. Grateful to be part of a community doing so much for early childhood education.

Ask the Teachers Before You Redesign

If you're redesigning a classroom, don't only ask what looks good.

Ask the teachers what frustrates them.

Where do they constantly walk back and forth? What gets in the way during transitions? What do they wish they had more room for? What part of the room never seems to work?

Those answers can reveal problems that aren't obvious from a floorplan.
