When you first step into this Emerald Bay home, you’re welcomed by a thoughtfully layered space showcasing meaningful pieces collected over the years. Instead of a traditional foyer, the home’s unique layout wraps around the tree, with French doors opening out onto the patio from every room. We chose to embrace this layout and create a more dimensional living space by extending the paneling to the ceiling, installing pocket doors in the den, and repositioning the staircase, making the home’s entrance more family-friendly and functional. ⁠

Above the fireplace hangs a David Hockney collage, while a mixed-metal Bertoia sound sculpture stands next to the fireplace. For years, we’ve partnered with our art advisor, Sharón Zoldan | SZ Advisory, to thoughtfully source and curate art for our projects, helping clients build collections that are both unique and deeply meaningful.⁠

Layers of textures, including a wood José Zanine Caldas coffee table, one-of-a-kind ceramics, and a Mattia Bonetti side table that sits next to a 1950s Rita Valla lounge chair upholstered in shearling, set the tone for this California beach house. ⁠

Framed by views of a twisted willow tree and a private beach, the primary suite becomes the ultimate home sanctuary. In the bedroom, silk wallcoverings soften the palette, complemented by an iron bed frame and delicate glass lanterns. At the foot of the bed, a custom 1920s-inspired burl wood cabinet with a concealed TV lift keeps the space serene, yet functional.⁠

Flanking the main bedroom are his-and-hers ensuite bathrooms, each complete with walk-in closets and coffee bars, thoughtfully designed for morning rituals and evening unwinding. ⁠

Down the hallway, the lounge area draws inspiration from classic Laguna Beach wood-clad homes. Collaborating with skilled craftsmen, we integrated intricate woodwork into the windows and ceiling, perfectly framing the ocean view. “My whole family likes to get cozy and watch the sunset—the hillsides are filled with homes, and they all glow rose gold in the evening,” shares Lisa Gutow Berman, reflecting on the tranquil ambiance of the primary suite.⁠

Upstairs, a vaulted lounge connects the children’s rooms, creating the perfect space for reading, relaxing, and movie nights. A felt work by Yeni Mao is displayed above the custom sectional, while a shou sugi ban driftwood coffee table adds texture and contrast, introducing a playful, intriguing element to the room. ⁠

Just off the lounge, each child’s bedroom was thoughtfully designed to feel like a unique, personal retreat. With en-suite bathrooms, built-in shelving, and ocean views, the kids can enjoy growing up here for many years. ⁠

In this guest bathroom, we drew inspiration from an antique dresser to design a custom vanity complemented by dark-veined Calacatta Nero marble and warm brass hardware. The sconces are custom pieces by Studio Gutow, while the mirror is a vintage find. ⁠
