WHAT WE LOVE ABOUT WHAT WE DO… ❤️
Sometimes you pick up an old photograph and it sends you down a rabbit hole into Hollywood history.
We recently found this very well-loved photograph of Frank Sinatra and Ava Gardner. It is creased, cracked, scratched and worn from decades of handling.
Then we turned it over.
Their names and a date had been handwritten on the back. Even more interesting, the photograph had been mounted over an old Ava Gardner scrapbook page filled with newspaper clippings, handwriting, stamps and other bits of memorabilia.
So we started digging. 🔎
The photograph was taken in Hollywood in July 1951, when Frank Sinatra accompanied Ava Gardner to the premiere of MGM’s SHOW BOAT.
Ava starred as Julie LaVerne alongside Kathryn Grayson and Howard Keel. The Hollywood world premiere was held July 17, 1951.
But another Hollywood story was unfolding that night.
Frank and Ava were already romantically involved, but they weren’t married yet. Their relationship had become one of Hollywood’s most talked-about romances.
Just months after this photograph was taken, Frank Sinatra and Ava Gardner married in Philadelphia on November 7, 1951.
Their fiery marriage ultimately ended in divorce in 1957, but their connection continued long afterward.
And this battered little photograph captured them right in the middle of that remarkable story.

The original remains untouched. Every crease, crack, stain and scar is still there.
