I may have squealed when this came together! A peacock with shoes and a tumbleweed? HA! That was fun!! I look at these drawings now and wonder how different they would look if I went back to add shading. Perhaps someday, especially if someone asked me to. Otherwise, I continue to move forward, discovering more and more shiny objects to capture my attention & share with my students.

Here's one I love! When you look at the day of 6 tangles, you can see some were challenging. The leaves were fun (Nalu), but how do I combine that with the other geometric designs that I was so uncomfortable with? My first attempt was, as one of my students says, "garbage". (We're working on that thought pattern, but sometimes, that's the actually reality of how artists feel!) I sat with the designs, allowing calm to take over and my imagination began to work! Somehow, I saw a sound hole for a stringed instrument. I realized that Nalu could be on the outside and before I knew it, my first 9x12 work of art was coming to life! It took a bit, but I'm so glad I took the time. I can clearly see ways to improve it now, but what fun! Not only was it neat to learn to draw using the Zentangle Method, it was encouraging to realize that the sky is truly the limit.

Open the photos to see a set of tangles from a couple weeks later. I had a couple hours to do something in Orlando, so I took time to explore. I found a wonderful Columbian bakery & coffee shop called Mecato's. I enjoyed a coffee and pan de Bono, then sat and created. I don't do artistic things in public very often (especially back then!), so this was a new experience for me. To my surprise, people walked past, peeked at my work and complimented it! That felt really good! It was an honor because I truly had no idea where to take this set of tangles. It was a great learning experience! 🌟

Fairly early on, I discovered a group who wanted to get together to learn new tangles. Group members would submit ideas and a reference to where we could learn the steps. The administrator of the group selected 6. We were in agreement to work on one tangle each day and share our work with the group once we completed the "assignment".

I decided to take it a step further. My goal was to give the tangle purpose and meaning beyond what it had on its own. Notice the portion of the paper where it is framed in. That's my first attempt of incorporating art 6 tangles into one design. I really enjoyed the challenge! Now it's kind of fun to see how I did that. Lol

I'll share more through the weekend as I count down to the first official day of certification! (Monday is coming fast!!! πŸ₯³πŸŽ‰)

This is the first pattern I drew. (I do not know the name of it.) I remember watching the simple video over and over, simply amazed at the ease. I finally tried it, pausing the video every 2 seconds. Lol

To see that I (who could not draw) was able to replicate this pattern was incredible! I was quite shocked, but the lessons it taught me stand strong.

1. Try. Believe in yourself to do at least that much. It's pen & paper. What's the worst that could happen?
2. Trust the process & take your time. It's OK to be in the moment.
3. Give yourself permission to explore. Back in the day, I had just discovered Andrea Nelson demonstrating watercolor. She is a treasure! She, too, breaks things down. She is very encouraging! I took what I learned from watching her videos & decided to paint this. To this day, it brings a smile to my face as I reflect back!

So I ask you...
1. What creative endeavor are you willing to try today? If you are unsure and need help, feel free to reach out!
2. Will you please share them?
3. Would you like to tangle with us on Wednesday?

Ps... less than a week before my certification classes begin! πŸ’

Earlier this week, I was asked one thing I wish I knew when I started painting. I can add deeper insight than I used to...πŸ’”πŸ˜₯πŸ™

This week, someone came in to my studio. She saw the dragonflies I painted. The next thing I know, I was learning about her deceased son and I was gifting that painting to her with misty eyes. As I reflect on that, I realize...

Art evokes emotions. It connects us. And, it allows us to give others a gift no one else could give them. That one moment, along many others, makes my decision to pursue art (despite believing I didn't have any artistic talent) absolutely priceless!

I'm thankful for all who have been a part of my journey! Those whom I've learned from, those who have encouraged me, those who have taken classes from me, and even those who silently follow. You've made a difference in my world, & I appreciate it!

Fun fact: The painting is from my first year of learning.

Today is world mental health day, so I thought I would share just a little from the beginning of my art journey. πŸ™‚

Full transparency, I have always enjoyed art, I just never believed I could be very good at it. Then one night, as I was doom scrolling, I saw an example of someone drawing this flower. They made it look so easy that I couldn't resist trying!

You know how the glorious FB algorithms roll... When they figure out you like something, they show you more. The next thing I knew, I was trying things. A couple months later, I found myself stepping up to teach an art class. What I thought was going to be a simple sub role became much more than I ever imagined!

I've been working more diligently on my homework for my Zentangle certification. Pictured are 4 basic designs. I wanted to show you how we can take the basic design and vary it just a bit to create something with a much different effect.

1. Top left: Florz
2. Top center: Florz + Printemps (the swirl)
β˜†The next four designs are further variations of Florz.
3 & 4. 3rd row left: Crescent Moon & Hollibaugh
β˜†The following designs are all variations of Hollibaugh.

I think it's really fun to see what appears on the page with each variation. Florz was just a basic grid. Just round the corners or add a simple embellishment and it becomes so much more!

Similarly, Hollibaugh began as random sets of parallel lines that cross paths. Giving them curves, arranging them neatly or adding minor details completely shifts perspective or meaning.
