Summer here we come!!!

With summer comes long days, sore backs and dirty fingers. This week we dirtied our hands and planted hundreds of dahlias. Yes they won’t bloom until August but they are worth the wait with extraordinary blooms in all colors.

Some things we are doing differently with our dahlias this year;

Flagging early. Every year we go through once they start to bloom and flag the different varieties. This year we are flagging at planting. Each variety gets a stake to mark the beginning of a new variety. No more lost tags or not the right number of tubers because some died.

Deleting some from the flock.
Some dahlias have not earned their keep therefore they have to go. Cafe’ o la is one variety that does not grow or keep well so out it goes.

Molasses fertilizer.
There are many different ways to use molasses to fertilize your dahlias. Some use it dried and directly at planting and some as a foliage feed as the plants grow.
Molasses helps with the bric content in the soil. More sugar more blooms.

Until they bloom we will w**d, trellis, fertilizer and admire them.
