Sock-heel lifesaver alert. You know that heart-in-your-throat moment working a heel flap: turn, gusset, praying your instep stitches don't slip off a naked DPN tip?

Here's the fix: cap BOTH tips of the DPN with barber cord. One end of the tube on each tip, and now your needle + cord make one closed loop - those instep stitches literally cannot escape while you work the heel. That needle just sits and waits, stitches locked in, zero anxiety. And this little trick? It's just ONE thing barber cord can do: the full Knitting Corner is coming with even more. Stay tuned! 💗💗

Same "you are here," two smart moves: and both come down to one thing: the marker comes OFF.
Knitters: keep it on the needle as your spot, or pin it into the fabric every few rows and read your count right off the knitting. Crocheters: pick to how long it stays in: locking to TRUST it, spiral to grab-and-go.

The type that works in both crafts? The removable locking kind, your versatile buy if you do both. Which marker's on your project right now? Part 2 of our Tools & Notions series: full "how to choose your notions" Sheeptorial coming soon.

A plain closed ring lives on your needle forever. These little bulb markers do more: because they come OFF.

On the needle, it's your normal "you are here" ring. But unclip it and pin it right into the fabric every 5 or 10 rows, and now you read your row count straight off the knitting: no tallying in your head, no sticky note.

One marker, two jobs, just by where you put it. Sock knitters: beginning-of-round on the needle, pin one in your heel flap to track length.

Two markers in your tin, one question: how long are you leaving it in? The locking safety-pin type is the one you TRUST- clip it through the stitch and it's not budging (perfect for the last stitch of a spiral round).

The coil-less spiral kind is grab-and-go: drop it on to mark an increase, pull it off, barely a snag. Trust it, or grab-and-go. 👉 Working a spiral sock? That's a locking-marker job. But in the end you need both to adapt to the job at hand! Part 2 of our Tools & Notions series! [notions Sheeptorial link once set]

Here's the twin: and this time it's a matched set. 🐑 Same rule runs both crafts: slick metal for grabby yarn and speed, grippy wood (or bamboo) for slippery yarn and long-session comfort.

Knit or crochet, your hand's asking the same question: how much slide do I want? Which one's in your hands right now? Our new Tools & Notions series has just begun, full "how to choose your notions" Sheeptorial coming soon.

08/26/2026

Metal, wood, or bamboo? Stop picking by vibe. The rule is slide: grippy needle for slippery yarn, slick needle for grabby yarn.

Metal's fast and strong at tiny sock sizes; wood and bamboo grip slippery yarn so it can't dive off your tips. Speaking of socks: Lucky Feet is superwash (read: slippery), so this one's for my sock-class crew. Two-part Knit Sock Class starts Aug 27! 👉 sheepthrillsknitting.com/module/class/653362/lets-knit-socks-together-zoom

Confession: I said hooks are metal all the way… then remembered my hook roll is mostly wood.

Here's the honest version: metal glides (fast, grabby yarn, the workhorse), wood grips back and stays kind to your hands on the long sessions. So: grabby yarn or speed → metal. Slippery yarn or long haul → wood.
