Samhain is not only one night at the end of October.
For many witches, the movement toward it begins now.
The light shortens.
The evenings deepen.
The landscape begins to empty itself.
Leaves fall. Fields quieten. The year turns inward.
October becomes a threshold month.
A time to prepare rather than rush.
To remember rather than distract.
To notice what has ended, what is ending, and what you are ready to stop carrying into the darker half of the year.
As Samhain approaches, ancestral work often becomes more present.
Names are spoken again.
Photographs are placed on altars.
Candles are lit for the dead.
Stories are retold so the people who came before us are not reduced to silence.
Divination also takes on a different feeling at this time of year.
Tarot.
Scrying.
Dream work.
Pendulums.
Bone casting.
Not as entertainment, but as ways of asking better questions in a season built around endings, transition and memory.
The closer we move toward Samhain, the more intentional the preparation can become.
Clean the altar.
Choose the names you want to honour.
Write down what you are ready to release.
Pay attention to dreams.
Spend time in stillness.
Learn the history behind the practices you use.
Let October unfold slowly.
Samhain does not need to be reduced to one dramatic night.
The descent is part of the ritual.
And it begins today.
