Most trees that are cut down are needlessly burnt.

Our goal at Resurrected Woodworks is to save as many of those trees as possible and turn them into functional art.

A few times this year I’ve brought logs to the Lawrence Farmers Market to split into billets. Ifn your curious, a billet is a roughly shaped piece of wood spilt ( or sawn) for something where the grain orientation is helpful. For example, a baseball bat. These billets were split with spoons in mind. After splitting, I air dried them for a bit and sent them to the kiln to finish drying. Well they’re dry now and ready to turn into spoons. To help me carve them up I made this spoon mule out of leftover parts around the shop. Mostly turn of the century lumber from Lawrence and a broken chair someone gave me. Might call it bill after the pony in the hobbit but I’m not sure. It needs a solid name. Open to suggestions. I’ll be at market this Saturday from 730-1 ifn ya wanna come out and watch the magic happen.

Hand carved vessel made out of black walnut. Loosely titled “7” this piece features a vessel supported by five tendrils emerging from the base. The inspiration for this piece came from birds nest I saw one day while walking the dog. I was fascinated by how it was so perfectly nestled between this group of vines. I wanted the piece to feel very organic so I left the carved texture on the tendrils and added a swirling gouge texture on the base. The title refers to the seven stitches or lessons I learned while carving the piece. Most importantly, always wear safety gear.

One of the current pieces I’m currently working on. 12 foot long 3 feet wide and almost 3 feet tall sculpture out of a single piece of Red Elm. The vision was to have three oval shaped structures interacting with each other. Initially to lighten the piece to take it to the shop, I carved it on site at the corner of 21st and Naismith. The interaction with people passing by was wonderful! I’m hoping to have it done it early September to display at this years art show. #

A vessel I completed this summer in walnut. I’ve always been fascinated by primitively made tribal carvings. There were several at the Nelson Atkins museum of art when I was a kid and they absolutely entranced me. When I started this one I wanted to give it a more primitive feel, evoking the carvings I enjoyed so much. I wasn’t super clear on how I would do that other than I knew that the carvings had to be deeper. Just a scratch on the surface wouldn’t do. After sitting with it awhile, it came to me that this should be a circular pattern. So starting at the rim, I carved a thin ribbon that wraps around the vessel ending at the bottom. A pattern also found in labyrinths around the world. To give an even more primitive feel, much of the work was completed by hand
