Madi’s had her medications administered 4 of the 5 ways. IV, Orally, Intrathecally and Subcutaneously. FUN FACT...the subcutaneous injections for Madi were given at HOME (LUCKILY, we have a neighbor that's a nurse and she graciously did it for us).
The hardest one for me to watch is the Intrathecal. Madi has had a spinal fusion, so there was too much calcification in her back for them to continue doing her spinal taps. Instead she has a Ommaya Reservoir (port in her head) and she receives her "taps" this way, which means she is AWAKE! They stick a butterfly needle into this "port in her head" and draw spinal fluid to check for cancer and put chemo through this port to treat her spinal fluid. And they have to do this 22 times! Madi's down to less than 8 more!
No matter which medication, it's never a quick trip to the doctor. It’s wires, backpacks, beeping machines, and constant monitoring — all to help her body fight leukemia with everything it’s got.
And through it all, Madi keeps smiling. Keeps fighting. Keeps inspiring. 💪🏽💪🏽
