Believe it or not, the scariest thing in your house this October might be a vacuum that quits right before your guests arrive—especially with crumbs on the floor, tracked-in leaves by the door, candy wrappers under the couch, or a rug that’s seen better days.

Your sewing machine may look clean—but lint is likely hiding where you can’t see it. After all, dust, thread fragments, and fabric fibers often collect beneath the needle plate, even when the bobbin area appears spotless.

That hidden buildup is a problem because it can contribute to skipped stitches, tension problems, noisy operation, and fabric-feeding issues.

To avoid such issues, regularly remove the needle plate according to your machine’s instructions and gently clean underneath it with a small lint brush. Be sure to always turn off and unplug the machine before doing so, and avoid blowing lint farther inside.
