Circles prevail in our design solution for our client’s dining room. The combination of a Ralph Lauren chandelier, a round table, curves in the area rug, and wheels in the art keep the dining room playful and casual. The dining chairs feature removable upholstery for washing. The table and chairs link to a rectangular kitchen table on the other end of the space by the same maker. For large gatherings, both tables fill.

Can a living room be too large? Sited high on a hill above a Berkshire pond, our client’s living room was impossible. Its one redeeming quality was the beautiful view. The fireplace was positioned at the top of the stairs from the foyer and the only way to arrange the furniture engaging the fireplace was to push everything off center leaving a room sized opening in front of the view windows. The only way forward was to gut it. By redesigning and repositioning the fireplace in the middle of the space, we were able to center seating, lighting, and storage. Our client’s large extended family including married adult children and their friends can now gather in this room and everyone can find a seat.

Before and After: When we were hired, the scale of the living room fireplace in our clients’ Berkshire retreat felt overlarge, unfriendly and weirdly cold. The mantel stone floated more than 6 feet off of the floor and the multiple types of stone used didn’t make aesthetic sense. A fireplace is the focal point of any living room - especially in New England - and this one was off center from the rest of the space to boot.

Our first step was to scale down the fireplace by removing the stone mantel – no easy feat as it went into the masonry wall. In order to ground and center the fireplace within the seating arrangement, we added a custom made natural blackened steel surround and screen, leaving the fire box off center. The screen is mounted with a barn slider onto the metal surround, which leaves the floor space free and makes tending to the fire much simpler. The materials we introduced are warm, rich, and tactile to instill a sense of coziness. Lightly stained white oak now wraps around the interior wall; textured, iridescent metallic bronze brick surrounds the fire box and hearth. While modern in approach, our blackened steel installation references hundreds of years of fireplaces and stoves.

Our goal for the dining room was to make a relatively small room feel larger by keeping the color palette light and airy. The combination of upholstery fabric on our custom chairs is playful but still sophisticated. Our client requested that our color scheme work with many different kinds of “holiday” table settings. By keeping the room neutral with an accent of spring green, our palette works beautifully with a wide variety of other colors, as in a garden. For the dining room window shades, we reversed the position of the damask to the solid linen in contrast to the kitchen. The repetition of color and materials link the two rooms without repeating.

Our clients’ existing kitchen was beautifully installed, in terrific shape and highly functional. How lucky for them! We added a softer paint color and a sitting area for our client couple to have coffee or a glass of wine while waiting for something good to come out of the oven. We placed two settees facing a centered ottoman anchoring the furniture within the footprint of the triple sash windows.

In the media room we repeated our neutral colored walls and some of the accent colors from the living room. A brilliant coral dresses a modern swivel chair; coral orange embroidered throw pillows accent the plum and natural linen sofa. On the ottoman table, outdoor fabric builds the color theme in a fresh woven windowpane plaid. The ceiling is coated in a rich plum brown.

This is a second home for our clients and their family. They had requested a work space for computer work and also had requested a bar setup for entertaining. There was no room we could dedicate to a home office function so we placed a desk behind the sofa in the living room instead of a console table --- our homeowner mainly needed a place to work on her laptop. For the bar, we designed an armoire with real birch bark veneered doors. Closed, the bar cabinet adds drama, height, and texture to an otherwise unused corner of the living room. When opened, the mirrors, glasses, and liquor bottles dazzle and tempt.

The arched opening of the living room directly faces the arched opening of the family’s media room across a wide hallway. It was important for us to create a color palette that was distinct in each but also analogous because of the open sightlines between the two rooms. We opted for a warm neutral wall color in each space and expressed the differences on the fifth wall: the ceilings. In the living room we papered the ceiling in a thickly textured, basket weave grass cloth. Brilliant shades of coral, lime, sunny yellow, plum, and turquoise accent fabrics contrast the otherwise neutral space.

Color is the one issue that links all of my creative activity. It gets me out of bed in the morning.

I love the whole subject of color; for a designer, color is a power tool. Color can command your complete attention or it can allow your mind to wander and expand. It is our first and strongest impression: dark and mysterious, pale and muted, crisp and clean, or warm and sophisticated. As a fine artist and painter, color is something I know about and color keeps teaching me new things.

Much of my joy in designing comes the moment I can consider the application of color. I love its infinite possibility and complexity, value, hue, intensity, temperature, in the shadow, in the light, foreground, background, accent or envelope.
