June 24 is National Patch Day, and we encourage everyone to send a token of love to a child in need of support, kindness, and healing in the form of a patch. Today, let us wrap our arms around the children who are struggling with disease, mental illness, the loss of a loved one, or simply going through a difficult time.

Children and teens face enormous pressure in the world today. According to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, “36.7% of adolescents between the ages of 12-17 have reported persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness.” When physical and mental health challenges compound these pressures, things can quickly start to feel overwhelming for kids. Unsurprisingly, it can be hard to know what we can do to help a child experiencing sickness, grief, or other challenges. Luckily, National Patch Day encourages everyone to show support for kids (and their families) as they navigate through their varied journeys.

Phone calls, emails, or text messages can fall short during the challenges of everyday life, as well as during family struggles or illnesses. However, receiving an unexpected gift in the mail can work magic. Imagine a child opening their mailbox to find a surprise package from a loved one just for them. In fact, sending physical mail is a powerful way to let a young person know you care, especially in our increasingly digital world. A tangible token of love can alleviate loneliness and foster a sense of true support. Reaching out through the mail reinforces connections in a busy world and reminds our loved ones they are not alone on their journey.

On June 24 each year, North American workers celebrate National Take Back the Lunch Break Day to promote worker happiness and productivity.

There’s been an increasing trend to take less frequent and shorter lunch breaks, affecting employee morale and well-being. According to Gallup, only one in three employees are engaging at work. Because engagement affects productivity, happiness and job satisfaction, employees and employers across North America need to step up to the plate – the lunch plate that is!

Tork, an Essity brand (2017) revealed in a study that employees who take lunch breaks are more likely to report being efficient at work and satisfied with their jobs. Their survey reveals that nearly 90 percent of employees consider the ability to take a lunch break critical when accepting a new job. However, once they are on the job, the average lunch break is less than 30 minutes for more than half of North American workers – barely enough time to purchase a meal, let alone enjoy it.

Vendor #0306 aka HEV Toys has just brought in this wonderful vintage 6 Million Dollar Man lunchbox and Thermos! It would be a great way to take back your lunch break and have a little fun with it! It is available now at The Antique Gallery of Lewisville for $65

Each year on June 23, National Pink Day colors the world in vibrant shades of pink and explores everything it represents.

Dating back to the 14th century, "to pink" (the verb) means "to decorate with a perforated or punched pattern." It would have been curious to find pink used in fabric or decor during the Middle Ages. Occasionally it was seen in women's fashion and religious art, however.

Artists primarily used pink for the flesh color of faces and hands during the Renaissance. But during The Rococo Period (1720-1777), the color pink was the golden age. Pastel colors became very fashionable in all the courts of Europe during this time. In fact, Madame de Pompadour (1721-1764), the mistress of King Louis XV of France, was known for wearing the color pink, often combined with light blue. At one point, Ms. Pompadour had a particular tint of pink explicitly made for her.

Pink ribbons or decorations were worn by young boys in 19th century England. The men in England wore red uniforms, and since boys were considered small men, boys wore pink. Pink became much bolder, brighter, and more assertive in the 20th century and in 1931, the color "Shocking Pink" was introduced.

As one of the most common colors of flowers, pink serves to attract the insects and birds that are necessary for pollination.

Vendor #0033 aka Emerald City Antiques has brought in this pretty pink serpent! It is a great way to add some unexpected pink to your decor!

We won't limit you or your time on this affectionate holiday, but National Kissing Day on June 22 encourages us to pucker up for a smooch. Whether the kiss comes from your significant other, your children or pets, share the love!

The kiss has been a part of our culture for thousands of years. The reasons we kiss vary, too. While affection and attraction may be the most common reason for kissing, the kiss has also been used as a greeting. In some cultures, kissing a cheek may date back to Christian rituals. In Ireland, the custom of kissing the Blarney Stone has existed for centuries and is said to bestow the kisser with the gift of eloquence and persuasiveness.

There is a medieval tradition of kissing the feet or royalty to those in power. We hope this form of kissing has been extinguished. A similar act of kissing includes kissing the ring of someone to show fealty, such as the Pope. Which leads to hand-kissing. While this gesture suggests loyalty to someone, it has a friendlier connotation than that of kissing feet. For some, it's a sign of respect and affection.

But National Kissing Day offers more than a history lesson. It encourages us to reconnect and draw closer to our loved ones. Whether it's a peck on the cheek or a passionate kiss, when we receive one from someone we love, kissing brings joy. Kissing triggers the release of endorphins which in turn tells our brain it's happy. When we kiss, our anxiety is reduced and our blood pressure lowers, too. Maybe those boo-boo kisses from mom carry some real power.

Vendor #9045 aka Daisy's Vintage Market has these two cute kissing boy and girl figurines that are also salt and pepper shakers! They are available now at The Antique Gallery of Lewisville for $14.99 for the set!
