Did your roofer forget to peel this off? 🤔

Customers ask me this all the time: "Did you take that little plastic strip off the back of the shingles before you nailed them down?"

Nope. And that's correct.

That strip has nothing to do with how your shingles stick. It's there for the packaging. Shingles get bundled face to face, and that strip sits right where the glue line hits the next shingle, so the whole bundle doesn't fuse into one brick on the pallet.

On the roof, the sun heats the sealant strip and it bonds the shingle above it. The plastic strip stays put and doesn't get in the way.

So now you know. 🏠

A roof leak doesn't always mean a new roof 👇

A leak in the ceiling. Most people figure that means a new roof. This one came down to one spot: where the roof meets the wall, the old flashing failed and water got in behind it.

We pulled the shingles back, ran ice and water membrane up the wall, put in new flashing, and laid the shingles back down. One repair. Not a new roof.

If it's a small fix, I'll tell you. 📞 817-714-3366 · Biltmore Roofing · Veteran-owned · Lewisville / Flower Mound

3 spots where almost every roof leak starts 👇

I fix a lot of roof leaks, and almost everyone starts in one of three places: pipe boots, where the roof meets a wall or chimney, and valleys. Bonus: nail pops. Tiny hole, big stain.

Good news: most of these are a repair, not a new roof. Got a stain? Free look, and if it's a small fix, I'll tell you. 📞 817-714-3366 · Biltmore Roofing · Veteran-owned · Lewisville / Flower Mound

97% chance of rain Thursday. If your roof has a problem, that's the day you find out.

Here's what most people get wrong: a roof almost never leaks where the water shows up inside. Water runs. It gets in high — at a pipe boot or a piece of flashing — then runs down the decking and drips through your ceiling ten feet away. That's why the stain on your ceiling is almost never under the actual hole.

If you get a stain this week, three things:

1. Bucket down, move what's under it.
2. Take a photo with the date showing. If it gets worse later, that photo is what proves when it started.
3. Don't let anybody climb up on a wet roof to "take a look." Nobody diagnoses a leak in the rain, and wet shingles are how people get hurt.

Once it's dry, that's when somebody gets up there and actually finds it.

Free inspection once it stops, no pressure. 817-714-3366

Most homeowners never think about this — but the weather on the day your roof goes on matters. A lot.

Here's the deal:

❄️ **Too cold** (near freezing): asphalt shingles get brittle. They can crack when they're handled or nailed, and the sealant strips don't bond right — so they don't seal down like they should. Install in the wrong cold and you're setting up problems before the first storm.

🔥 **Too hot** (over 100° — the big one here in Texas): shingles get soft. And some manufacturers' shingles scuff and mark up easy. When a crew walks across a roof that hot, those soft shingles can take footprints and scuffs just from the foot traffic. That's damage to a brand-new roof.

So what do we do? We watch the forecast and work around it — early starts in the summer to beat the heat. We don't force a job on a day the conditions are going to hurt the quality. A roof's supposed to last 20, 30 years. I'm not going to rush it onto your house on the one day the weather's against us.

That's the difference between a crew that just wants to knock it out — and one thinking about your roof 10 years down the road.

They fired a 4-inch block of ice at this roof. Watch the close-up at the end.

They fired a 4-inch block of ice at this roof. Watch the close-up at the end.

This is Euroshield's own hail cannon test. A 4-inch ice cylinder, clocked at 183 mph on the chronograph, goes into their Vermont Slate rubber shingle. Slow it down and look at the roof afterwards. There's not a mark on it.

A few straight facts:

• Euroshield carries a Class 4 impact rating (UL 2218). That's the top of the scale.
• It's made from recycled tire rubber, so it flexes instead of cracking.
• Some Texas insurers give a discount on a Class 4 roof. One of our Lewisville customers saw his premium drop about $60 a month. Ask your agent what yours offers. Every policy is different.

It costs more up front than asphalt. For some homes it's worth it, and for some it isn't. I'll tell you which one yours is.

You can't see the fiberglass mat from the roof. So why is it in your denial letter?

Some carriers look at a hail bruise and ask one question: "But was the fiberglass mat fractured?"

You cannot see the mat from on top of a roof. You'd have to pull the shingle off and flip it over. Nobody does that on an inspection — not their adjuster, not me.

I keep it simple. Hail bruises, counted in a 10x10 test square. That's what I document. I'm not adding an extra element to the definition — that's their move, not mine.

Biltmore Roofing is a Gold sponsor of the Flower Mound band and guard this year, and tomorrow's the day they go out and earn it.

The FloMo March-A-Thon is Saturday. Fifteen stops across Flower Mound, Highland Village, Bartonville and Double Oak, from noon to about two. The kids march out in full uniform, in September Texas heat, and play for whoever stops to listen.

Full schedule is on the flyer — there's a stop near just about everybody.

I'll be out there myself. My son's in the band, which is how we got involved in the first place. Sponsoring it was an easy call after that.

If you're running errands Saturday afternoon and you hear a drumline in a parking lot, pull over for a minute. Roll the window down. Those kids have been rehearsing since July. And if you've got a few dollars on you, it goes straight to instruments, uniforms, buses and contest fees — the stuff that keeps a program like this alive.

Go support them. 🐆

"The sentence that killed your claim"

If you told the adjuster "it's been leaking a while" — or "I'm not sure when it started" — that's not storm damage anymore.

That's wear and tear. And wear and tear isn't covered.

Same roof. Different words. Different outcome.
