Recently received a large order of corpora from Italy!

Adding some gold embellishments to this resin corpus. The client was VERY happy with her crucifix!

Part 12: The requiem candle sticks were finally finished after 500 long hours.

In a requiem candle, the black historically symbolizes the absence death brings, the silver (known as a cool, or sorrowful, metal) symbolizes the sorrow, yet almost beautiful preciousness, of death. But the true meaning comes from the candle itself, a 3 ft. tall yellow beeswax candle.

In lighting this candle, we remember the Light of the World and the promise that He gave. The flame burning brightly reminds us that death is but transient and that sorrow is fleeting—the time for dancing shall come again.

There is such beauty and meaning in this long forgotten custom. I hope that one day every church will once again use requiem candlesticks during the funeral rite.

Part 11: Now the lettering…

Luckily I was able to make a stencil to aid me in this endeavor, but, because of the shape of the part I was lettering, I still needed to do a lot of custom fitting of the stencil with exactoknives and the like.

The words are: Dona Eis Requiem (grant them rest), which is the final response to the requiem Kyrie during the funeral rite.

Part 10: The foiling took almost 2 weeks of early mornings and late nights. The process is to apply the size (the oil based glue), let it dry for 12 hrs., apply the foil, and burnish off the excess.

Working in manageable sections, I would apply the size in the evening, foil in the morning, size a new section, and then foil that section before dinner, only to go back down around 8:30 pm to size a new section and start the process all over again.

Part 9: The next step for the candlesticks was to black (stain) them, lacquer them, and foil them.

A special thanks to Paul Sirofchuck of Sirofchuck Studios for spraying them for me. They were pretty tricky to spray evenly.

PART 4: Now began the fun! CARVING!!!

Not going to lie, but I had never really carved anything of import before this, but I had a fair grasp of how carving was done, and I had access to the greatest invention of our modern age: YouTube. So I bought dozens of chisels, a few sharpening stones, and tried my hand at carving the details on the feet.

Let’s just say that it was more time consuming than I initially thought!
