September giveaway! When you visit the studio this month make sure to put your name in the "hat" to win this mug.

Backstory on this mug: I was trying out a new idea - cut a bunch of leaves from the sweet woodruff plants outside the shop and painstakingly attached them to the clay. Then I painted wax resist over everything, peeled the leaves off, then brushed colorants into the leaf shapes. But that didn't work well and I ended up just hand-painting the leaves in.

By the time I was done I decided that was not something I'd ever want to do again! And I had so much time involved I'd have to charge way more than the end result was worth.
So I figured since it is a one-off, I'll just raffle it off.

Hours through September:
Fridays 3 to 7
Saturdays 10 to 5

This is a little belated, but here are the June and July giveaways.
Both of these folks have given me a good bit of business so I was happy to see their names revealed by chance.
(June's winner lives all the way out in Calif - so I anxiously wait for his next visit to the shop!)

Another unique mug will be given away for September.

New glaze! I'm calling it frosted lavender.
Only 3 available right now - gotta see what kind of reaction they get before making more.

As with all my glazes, I mixed this one myself. As far as I know it's the only one exactly like it, but I can't really take credit for it's invention - I asked the google machine how to modify a base glaze to get a lavender and it fed me a recipe. And it actually worked.

It's not all sunshine and flowers here at the studio!
When you test new things you take new risks, I had a total of 7 pieces from the last load that stuck to the kiln shelves because of too much glaze and too much heat.
I recently installed new heating coils and am still trying to adjust so that it doesn't over-fire.
Combine that with a new glazing scheme and it can spell disaster.
I was able to save a few of these by grinding off the overflowed glaze. Two pieces needed to be busted off.

New colors, new designs.
Much of my pottery work since June (in my spare time!) - has been experimental. I'm still trying out and testing new glazes on new clays - along with a lot of disasters and failures!
But there are nearly 100 mugs on the shelves now and I'm excited to share the successes:

UNLOAD and RELOAD. Starting on Sunday I've managed to do 5 firings so far, so that's pretty much ALL I've been doing! The batch that is in the kiln now firing took approx six hours to prepare.

Tonight it will be sanding the bottoms on new work and tending the shutdown of the kiln.

For now though - gotta get some fresh air - off to split and stack wood for a few hours!

Back in the saddle. Haven't posted anything in a while - my days are so broken up and long that it's challenging to take the time.
Here's a little catch-up:

TUESDAY after getting home around 6PM from Pappy's funeral, I quickly glazed and loaded the test kiln for a late firing. Then threw 3 large six-pound bowls and then cleaned up tools and equipment while I waited for the kiln to shut down at 1AM.

WEDNESDAY's work started at 9AM. Bowls needed to flipped and rims covered in plastic (so that handles could be attached later).
Then 10 mug cylinders thrown before noon.

Afternoon was spent spin-trimming and mowing my brother's property (3 hrs).
Rest of the day: weighing-out clay, threw another dozen mugs and several jewelry bowls, altering rims on the bowls, then covering everything up for the evening. Finished at 12:30 AM.

THURSDAY, started work at 9:30 - Trimmed the large bowls and made handles for them.

Afternoon: Trip to the feedmill and then across the border to top-off the truck gas at 28 cents cheaper (only amounted to about a 3$ savings but felt like a win), finished off with attaching handles to the large bowls.

Evening: Made mug handles, smoothed up and marked mug bottoms, attached mug handles.
Finished at 1:15 AM.

I hope (if you've gotten this far!) that you'll have a better idea why I'm such a stranger to the socials- it's literally the last thing on my agenda.

Much of this week was spent finishing and making final selection of the pieces I would be sending, as an invited artist, to the Charlie Cummings Gallery in Florida for their 22nd annual mug exhibition and sale.
Here are the five mugs that I just shipped out this morning.
But I did also manage to turn out a good bit of new work (still in the drying stage) that I hope to have ready for when I reopen on the 21st
