Authentic hardwood screw-top double candle stand by the H.T. Cushman Manufacturing Company, Bennington, Vermont, c. 1930s-1940s. The hardwood design features a tripod base supporting a circular gallery tray top with a turned central column. Above the tray, the screw-formed column rises to a top crossbar terminating in two rests for candles or for smoking accoutrements. Produced in the American Colonial/Traditonal style. Richly patinated in a variating brown stained finish. Original Cushman stamp and label on bottom. Functional as a candle stand, side table, pipe stand, drinks table or smoker’s table.

How do we encourage wonder and reflection?

I think in the wonderful world of antiques it is quite obvious: our modern eyes are comfortable at taking a quick gander at something because it is very simple and plain, often because it is mass produced. Contrast that with items that were constructed 50, 100, 150+ years ago, where everything was largely done by hand with a meticulous desire for quality, craftsmanship, and meaning within each piece.

When you walk through an antiques shop, you are naturally forced to slow down and examine each piece. In doing so, you wonder who the creator was, what caused them to create such a piece, and how many of them did they have to craft in order to feed their family that week?

So if you are feeling a bit rushed and have lost the ability to see wonder and awe, visit us. Maybe, just maybe, we can play a small part in restoring what was lost.
