Glass doors let a room stay separate without going dark. Here, frameless double doors sit in a wood-cased opening with the room beyond still being finished, paint cloths on the floor and the herringbone already down. The wood casing frames the glass the way a picture frame would.
The hardware is minimal on purpose: black bar pulls on the glass and small fittings at the corners. The cleaner the hardware, the more the glass fit has to be right.

This is what an entry looks like before drywall: bare studs, exposed wiring, and a pair of black-framed doors already set in the opening, with the site coming through the glass. Once the drywall goes up, none of this is visible again, which is why the frame gets so much attention.
Framing is where a door job is won or lost. The Chasteen Measurement Standard checks frame condition and structural support before anything is ordered, and that is easiest to do while the walls are still open.

A four-panel sliding door in a dark bronze finish, set into a new build with house wrap still on the wall and stickers still on the glass. Panels this size carry real weight, and they ride on the track and threshold.
A threshold that is off by a little shows up later as a door that drags. That is why it gets checked before the glass is ordered, not after the panels are in.

From the inside, this pair of French doors frames a patio and a clipped hedge, with roller shades mounted at the top of each panel to control the light. The glass runs nearly the full height of each door, so the view does most of the work.
A door like this should open without dragging and close without a gap at the threshold. That comes down to measuring the whole system and not only the opening.

A wide wall of sliding glass in a black frame, set into a covered patio on a new build. Blue tape and stickers are still on the glass, which is normal at this stage of a job.
Openings this wide put real weight on the threshold and the support around them. If either is off, the panels bind. Both get checked first under the Chasteen Measurement Standard, before any glass is ordered.

Frameless glass double doors in a wood-cased interior opening, with long black bar pulls and a herringbone floor carrying through from one room to the next. The trim and the floor stay the focus, and the glass lets both be seen from either side.
With frameless glass there is no frame to hide an uneven gap, so the fit has to be right. Even spacing and a clean swing come from measuring the opening itself, not working off the plans.

White French doors on a brick home, full-length glass in each leaf and brass hardware that suits the house. A good pair of French doors looks like it was always part of the place.
What keeps it that way is the fit. Swing clearance and threshold decide whether a pair like this opens smoothly for years or starts to drag, so both get measured before the glass is ordered.

A pair of double doors set into a new build, slim black frames with divided panes stacked the full height of each leaf. The film is still on the glass and the entry is still papered over, so the build is well short of finished, but the doors are in.
Doors like these are only as good as the threshold and the swing clearance around them. Both get checked before anything is ordered, under the Chasteen Measurement Standard, so the pair closes clean the first time.
