Meet the artist: Sasha Piergeorge

I love the quote from Elie Wiesel, "We must not see any person as an abstraction. Instead, we must see in every person a universe with its own secrets, with its own treasures, with its own sources of anguish, and with some measure of triumph."

In my acrylic paintings, I use layered squares or dots of color to express an inner "teeming" within the portrait. I want you to feel like the art piece is almost shifting before your eyes, reacting to you in micro expressions in your peripherals. Each art piece is its own universe. The interference colors shift when you look at it from a different angle. The fluorescent colors pop in the dark or reveal a different intensity in UV.

My pastel works also continue along this theme, with bold strokes of color making the subject's inner feelings external, almost like you are looking at them through some sort of emotion-sensitive thermal goggles.

I guess sharing my poetry is a way of turning that lens back on myself, showing you my different dimensions, my darkness and corniness and loveliness all revealed in old words and new ones.

More oil pastels πŸ’™πŸ’œπŸ’š

These 3 honestly all remind me of chronic illness in some way. The first is obvious; they may be dozing off from chronic fatigue or ME. The second, maybe they are sensitive to temperature and allergens as well (MCAS perhaps?) and the third is someone with POTS getting IV fluids to help them through the summer.

Of course, I think there is more than illness to be found in these images, but I can definitely see my own experience in them. What do you see?

Oil pastels πŸ’œπŸ©·πŸ©΅

Finally took some pictures of these. I've been doing figural work with pastels to brush up on anatomy and get used to drawing bodies in different lighting and positions again.

I would like to use my pointillism painting style to create large scale bodies eventually so these are great practice. I honestly do love working with oil pastels now too!

Meet the Artist: Sasha Piergeorge

As someone with terrible chronic pain, I often have to sit in the "Void" emotionally. I cannot do anything but be still and surrender to the moment, even if the moment is unpleasant. Painting is a way to face that feeling and delve into it safely. I paint layered squares and dots of color and sink into the moment. I channel my existential dread and passion into the work. Art is a meditative, spiritual practice for me.

Much of my work focuses on shapeshifting. For years, I felt like I had to be very careful and submissive in doctors offices to be considered "good enough" or sane enough to be heard.

This extended to other areas of my life as well. I felt like the real me was behind a two-way mirror, able to see out, yet unable to truly express myself.

Yet, now I see how shapeshifting can also be a fun form of expression. In Celtic myth, shapeshifters are powerful, even divine. It is considered a gift.

I express this in my art with interference colors and iridescence. These create depth and movement, as if the painting is constantly shifting and changing before the viewer's eyes, because it actually is changing in different light. Florescent paint is another favorite go-to; the painting completely transforms with a UV light over it, revealing another layer to the work.

Ultimately, my goal as an artist is to create work that is both visually striking and emotionally resonant. I hope that my art encourages viewers to embrace their inner beauty and question the way they show up in the world.
