Aeron’s sustainability story has always been one of material reduction. Think “less is more.” When the chair was first designed in 1994, the standard foam, fabric, and leather found in most office chairs at the time were nonexistent. In their place? A groundbreaking breathable material we called Pellicle. Over the next three decades, our engineers made tweaks and changes to the chair, like using recycled material in the chair, incorporating ocean-bound plastic*, and redesigning the chair’s aluminum base to reduce its material weight—and naturally lowering its carbon footprint. Still the same Aeron, unmatched comfort, and now—even better for the planet.**

As part of the company’s product decarbonization strategy, this combination of changes is estimated to reduce Aeron's global average embodied carbon footprint by 12%. Since 2022, through the integration of lower-carbon materials, Herman Miller has achieved carbon savings of over 7,000 metric tons.

*Aeron became the first chair in Herman Miller’s portfolio to be made with plastic that, had it not been diverted, otherwise could have made it into our oceans or landfills.
**By combining generative design with our deep engineering expertise, we’ve reduced the amount of material needed to create Aeron’s aluminum base by 0.84 kg (1.85 lbs)—without compromising its legendary durability or performance.

What if you could store everything in your walls? Imagine how much space you could save. That’s what George Nelson envisioned in 1944. His Storage Wall concept—a system of modular cabinets that could replace traditional walls—reimagined storage for post World War II living. The idea formed the basis of Nelson’s other storage designs, including Thin Edge Collection, long admired for its refined proportions and exceptional craftsmanship. Now the Thin Edge Collection is available for the first time in White Oak.

Alexander Girard. Herman Miller. Pendleton. What’s the common thread here? Perhaps it’s the dedication to bold colors and original design. A commitment to craftsmanship, highlighting techniques and unique details. Roots in American design that span decades. Combined, the three weave a story of heritage and quality design that result in a collection of throw blankets.

Designer George Nelson believed good design should solve problems. His Nelson Platform Bench did, but not in the way you might expect. Legend has it that he designed it so guests wouldn’t get too comfortable, hoping they would get to the point and then get out. Since its introduction in 1947, people have appreciated its simple form and versatility. (For people who hope visitors stay awhile, we offer Nelson Platform Bench Cushions.) And now the bench is available for the first time in White Oak.

Made of 80% post-consumer recycled polyester, Maharam Mode offers the look and feel of wool, but takes less energy to produce. Now it and other sustainability-minded textiles are available on the Eames Molded Plastic Dining Chair, making it more versatile than ever.

The Eames Molded Plywood Dining Chair began with Charles Eames’ and Eero Saarinen’s experiments at Cranbrook Academy of Art in 1941. Charles and Ray Eames continued developing ideas for a plywood chair for the next few years, playing not just with how to mold plywood but with the leg configuration. The prototype that all the Eames Office carpenters rushed to sit on at lunch was the “tilt back,” which made it possible to sit down in a normal way but then tilt back, because of the support of the rear legs. A three-legged version was also prototyped. The Eames Office ultimately decided on the four-legged design. Now, for the first time, the DCM and LCW, its all-wood sibling (both introduced in 1946) are now available in White Oak.

LCW, named Design of the Century by Time magazine in 2000, is available in many finishes, including, for the first time, White Oak.
