Engagement ring broke after 6 days — jeweler saying it’s my fault?
Hi everyone! I’m looking for honest opinions because I’m trying to understand if this is normal or something I should push back on.
EDIT: The warping shape is from me pushing it tighter after I noticed the break in the band so it wouldn’t fall off. There wasn’t any moment where I hit it on something but I guess I could’ve snagged it on something??
I recently got engaged and my ring has a ~5 carat diamond on a thin band (around 1.5mm). I originally requested a plain gold band that was 1.8 mm (should’ve gone even thicker) but the ring I received was thinner with pave diamonds that I didn’t order either.
I’ve only had the ring for 6 days, and it broke unexpectedly while I was just wearing it. No impact, no dropping, nothing unusual. I guess I could’ve snagged it on something unknowingly but I didn’t even notice the break until my friend pointed it out on my finger.
When I brought it back, the employee told me that this type of damage is caused by impact and directly said it would not happen without something like that.
That’s what’s confusing me because from my perspective, it broke under normal wear. Now I’ve been reading that thinner bands (especially with pave) may not be ideal for larger stones, so I’m wondering if this could actually be a structural/design issue.
EDIT: my fiancé picked up the final ring without me and I did not see it until he proposed. He didn’t know the band was wrong so he confirmed it looked okay and paid his remaining balance.
They’re currently reviewing it with regional management, but I’d really appreciate any insight:
• Is 1.5mm with pave too delicate for a stone this size?
• Should a ring break after only 6 days of normal wear?
• Has anyone had something similar happen, and did your jeweler take responsibility?
Thank you so much in advance! I really appreciate any input!
