The light was right so I snapped this photo of my parents’ living room. Every time I’m home, my mom and I discuss “upgrades” which entail mostly new pillows and reupholstering a few pieces.

Thank you for the newest addition to my bevy of matchstrikers. I’ve been collecting these since my early 20s after my mom gifted me one she found at an antique shop in the English countryside.

If you know me, you know orange is my color. This is a remnant cotton velvet (we think it’s from Stark but cannot say for sure). This chevron pattern is actually red + yellow but the pattern is so tight it presents as orange. This is 42” x 42” (another big one); backed in faux leather paired with a tangerine acrylic mirror. If I didn’t have enough fabric leftover to make another, I’d keep this for myself.

Let’s go back to the beginning, shall we? I was back East a few years ago and shopping at one of my top secret fabric sources. There was an ENORMOUS piece of orange leather(see photo) and I bought it not knowing what I would do with it.
My mom snagged a piece to reupholster an antique chair and I was left with an even more awkward shaped hide. A year later, on a whim, I decided I wanted an upholstered leaning mirror in my office and this orange leather was perfect for this project. I drew the design on a piece of graph paper and drove over to my workroom and handed everything over. I told the workroom they could cut and stitch the leather in order to get it to fit the 42” x 82” frame. The next day I called them frantically saying I changed the design! Round the corners for me (I had drawn them as squared). I get the upholstered frame back and it sits, leaning on my wall for a few months. I have to make a template for my glass guy and have him cut the mirror for me; that’s going to be a pain to do AND transport AND what if it breaks . . blah blah blah.
Then, a lightbulb went off. What if I used acrylic mirror? It’s lightweight, it won’t break, it comes in 15 colors . . . and P**F the idea for the mirrors was born (I went with gold, btw).
The very first mirror has been hiding in plain sight for a while. The design has been through a few iterations (things like deciding to close off the backs and upholster them as well so they were as pretty as the front)
There you have it. Scroll through to see 👀

Its BACK. I dropped this chaise off with my upholsterer in July and it was returned to me like new. I was elated to finally show case this fabric; I waited until I had a piece that was big enough to display the “Magical Ming” dragons.
I found this chaise at a vintage shop; it was a HOT MESS (see the before photos) BUT had great bones and was well constructed. I had planned on using it as a prop when we photographed the mirrors. That plan was put on the back burner and I finally revisited this reupholstery project before I headed back East to visit family. We opted for an overstuffed tight seat (in lieu of the cushion is came with). I backed this in a remnant yellow chenille I had stashed away; the color was a perfect match.

I can’t speak for all designers but I know a few of us have secret stashes of our favorite fabrics. My mom has had this fabric in her “stash” for 20 years. Two yards isn’t enough to do anything but throw pillows so I asked if I could take it to make a pair of mirrors. She happily handed it over.
Kelly Mirror in Weaving Scene, backed in a glossy faux leather and gold acrylic mirror. Size 24” x 36”.
