While we’re busy sending off summer let’s take a moment to remember how and why this holiday came about. American workers in the 1800s were in desperate need of basic social and economic protections. The poor were literally worked to death, children could be put to work at 5 years old, and laborers had no say or power in the workplace.

The Labor Movement arose to address these abuses and was a long and painfully hard-fought battle led by the underclass who persevered against all odds and in the face of seeming impossibility to reshape the labor landscape in this country.

Cut to today and it’s a sad fact that in the past 50 years most American manufacturing has been dismantled and those jobs shifted to other countries, to the peril of the workers AND the environment. Simply put, our consumer habits exploit the planet and the poor, and it’s not right.

Nothing exposed the flaws and vulnerabilities of this system more than the global pandemic, when we all became painfully aware of just how dependent we were on imported goods in our daily lives. So it is BY DESIGN that Clad Home furniture has ALWAYS been made right here in LA. Under the strictest environmental standards. With the smallest carbon footprint. By workers who earn a real living wage. And we will never trade our model for cheaper production anywhere else just to save a buck.

We believe in how we do this. We’re at our factory often. We know the men and women who sew the seams and plane the wood. We have a lot in common because we’re all invested in this local economy that supports our livelihood and feeds our families. And we don’t believe in disposable furniture. We make ours to last and last.

So this Labor Day weekend we want to
THANK YOU for your patronage and for supporting a company that strives to do better. For all of us.

Because you guys can never resist a peek behind the curtain, here is this week’s inspection photo of a perfect plaid Gardner chaise about to ship out to a lucky customer.

When we first designed our Gardner sofa, in collaboration with Shavonda SHAVONDA GARDNER||SG STYLE🏳️‍🌈, it was such a hit, with its pretty English roll arms that slope up to a subtle wing, that we decided we had to offer it as a chaise as well.
