11.11.1918 the guns fell silent. On Armistice day I am thinking of my grandfather and all those who served and those who gave their lives for their country. My Grandfather, Capt Archibald Vaughan Williams. His medals, including the 'Mons Star’ (and bar) awarded to those who served in France or Belgium between 5 August - 22 November 1914 - the ‘Bar’ above was awarded to those who served ‘under fire’. John Parr was the first British soldier to die, at Mons 21 August 1914 - he was 17. Like many young ‘men’ he had lied about his age, he joined the Middlesex Regiment when he was 15, claiming to be 18, the age on his tombstone is 20, as the army did not know he had lied on enlisting.

Favourite Fridays from Leo Vaughan WIlliams, Creative Director

The spectacular Shell Bed by William Kent at Houghton Hall - one of my all time favourite bedrooms - I think anyone would feel quite grand waking up here….I was lucky enough to be working at Christie’s in 1994 - and this was also one of my all time favourite sales. Houghton Hall is one of the finest English Palladian Houses and was built in 1720 for Great Britain’s first prime minister Sir Robert Walpole - if you get the chance - go and have a look.

We said good bye to Sarah’s father a couple of days ago - a man I am very proud to say was my Father in Law. The first time we met in 2001, we quickly discovered a mutual love of conviviality, music and PG Wodehouse. After a while we were left on our own and perhaps another bottle was opened and we talked, and talked…he had played the violin - as had I…. John had won a scholarship to read medicine at Cambridge and was offered top lodgings as long as he played his violin - I had been thrown out of an orchestra when I was 13. We tiptoed into the basement to fetch the fiddle, our 'cat like tread’ waking the whole house, when we returned to the dining room and quiet returned to the house, I played Ba Ba Black Sheep.. and John played Bach - and that pretty much summed up our relationship - he was brilliant and sometimes intimidating, but mostly he was wonderful company and a wonderful father/grandfather. He was with us for most of my birthdays and christmases and we had 3 disagreements - but even then, i have to admit that Stephen Fry can be a tad smug. We will miss him hugely but he will always be with us.

How incredibly lucky we were to have had such an inspirational and exceptional Monarch. HM was a constant in an often chaotic world and will be much missed.

Come on the Lionesses! Almost finished the downstairs loo - flamingo pink and then lipstick red on top - finished off with a fab lacquer from and one of my washstands ( purple!) with a purple marble and brass sink and hardware. Antiqued mirrors to come next….

Fantastic game by The England Lionesses - showing the men how it’s done- and that back-heeled goal was pure class.
