Reglet door trim — a longtime love of mine, quietly doing the most.

It’s a detail that disappears — a perfect line between wall and frame.

It requires a Level 5 drywall finish and the kind of care you can’t fake — care for the process, the intention, the outcome.

Only someone with real discipline can pull this off. And when they do, you feel it — even if you don’t know why.

This is the Bellaire house in Altadena — before the fire, and after.

I was brought in to specify all interior and exterior finishes as we rebuild this home from the ground up. The homeowner is a retired local high school art teacher who spent decades giving back to this community. Now, he’s stepping into a new chapter — pursuing his own art full time in a new home.

We added an art studio to the design, and every finish was chosen based on how he used to live, and how he wants to live now. This wasn’t just about replacing what he lost — it’s about building something that supports him in what’s to come.

Terrazzo flooring, modern plumbing, fire-rated windows and doors, natural light — selected for both function and modernity. Something he said he’s never had.

Rebuilds like this carry weight. They require empathy, clarity, and a process that centers the person living in it. I am so happy to get him to this point and can’t wait for building to begin!

STATEMENT

B H E U E (bo͞o / ˈbü / buː) to be, to exist, to grow

Bheue is an interior design studio and online store, founded in Los Angeles. Our aesthetic approach is rooted in the Japanese concept “mottainai,” a term that conveys regret over waste of precious materials. The Bheue pillow line exemplifies the practice of recycling as each piece is uniquely constructed with remnant precious cloth. We apply this concept to home interiors. Whether reupholstering a vintage sofa, repainting an old dresser, or removing the lacquer from brass, our guiding principle is the life extension of precious materials that would otherwise be discarded.

Operating out of California, there is a calling to the landscape you can't ignore. With the threat of wildfires looming over properties, there is an accountability we feel to the client, the home, and the land. We therefore source furnishings and materials responsibly and forge relationships with select craftsman and artisans of the like. We believe it is this deep appreciation to the spiritual value of nature that grounds a space into a home.
