A great way to acknowledge efforts by Ryan Hoke on behalf of his mom! How special is that!? I’m sure every little bit helps!
We've all been touched by cancer in some way. For some of us, it's a distant cousin or former classmate announcing their diagnosis on Facebook. For others, it's close friend or coworker going through chemotherapy. And for those even more unlucky, it's watching your still-young mother battle a rare and aggressive Stage IV metastatic breast cancer, when you're still just a child yourself. From 2004-2005, my late brother and I were those children. Imagine how tough your middle school years were. Now, add on to that having to help take care of a single mother who is in and out of the hospital, so tired from radiation and chemotherapy that she can't cook, and is constantly on the couch due to nausea. Sure, we had family and friends to help, but often I was the one taking care of things around the house and looking after my younger brother. These years taught me a lot about rising to the occasion when things get tough. They made me independent, but also gave me a newfound respect for those who care for the sick or elderly. All of this ended with cleaning out my room at my mom's house, helping with an estate sale, and living at my dad's house full-time from then on. My mom's passing from breast cancer in July 2005 suddenly ended what felt like half of my existence. So many kids know the challenges of living between split parents, but what happens when one of those households just... goes away? P**f. Gone. A whole home just vanished before my eyes, leaving behind years of paperwork and estate issues. I'm still trying to make sense of all of this 21 years later, honestly. This is why am grateful today for everyone and everything that I have. Cancer can take all of that away with little notice. This is why I fundraise for the American Cancer Society every year. I want to put an end to this happening to other families, and you can help me do that. Please donate to my Men Wear Pink campaign at the link in the comments below. I'm on the way to my $28,000 goal, but time is running out to donate by the end of October. Donate at the link in the comments below ⬇️
