Hold my soap box for a minute!!

I sat in a meeting last night where everyone was worried about vegetable and whatever virus or parasite was on them. And how fast food restaurants are removing the veggies from their food to "combat" the issue.

Im not worried by this most recent attack to our food system. Why? Because thats a big portion of why we raise our own food.

But do you guys realize this happens every year? The nation as a whole relys on large manufacturers to produce and deliver their food to grocery stores. There is no good way to mitigate every circumstance in those conditions!

Last year it was eggs. The year before beef. Im not sure what next year will be but I'm sure it'll be something.

The only way to be sure your safe is to know where your food comes from. Does this mean im telling you to go buy the farm and raise your own food. No. While i think thats a great thing to do,its not for everyone. But go to farm markets, roadside stands. Heck stop at someone's house where you see a garden and talk to them.

The truth is the farther we get from the source of our food, the sicker we become.

Today I ran into not 1 but 3 rams with short sc***um. Why does this happen?

Bottom line is it comes down to animal husbandry. The person who attempted to castrate these two rams didnt do so properly.
Why does this create problems?
Well #1 now someone is left with an intact male that they did not want. Said male now is creating more lambs thus making more work than the person who bought it intended.
#2 This ram has some major horns and has been tearing stuff up on this farm because hes still got all the hormones of a ram.

I am a firm believer that if you're going to be doing what would in a lot of states be considered vet work. Then you need to know what you're doing and do it properly. If you dont know how to do it. Then you had better be willing to call someone who does and pay them or learn.
If this was a single incident on this farm I would've called it a mistake, but there were at least 3 of them like this.
The worst part is the man who got these sheep was told by the previous owner that these rams would be infertile because they had been castrated. 🤦‍♀️
Not true a short sc***um does not make them infertile just less fertile!!

I've mentioned before that our family is big into the 4H program. For us its just something we do.
Today was the first year clinic for our sheep committee.
Last years showmanship winner got to run the program and she did a fantastic job.
To be 4H isnt all about banners or trophies its the things our kids learn along the way.

Its garlic harvest season. This year was a mixed bag, but overall I'm happy with what we got. I'll be able to save some back for seed and have some for use. Thats always the goal with garlic.

A huge shout out to John Oliver for the seed garlic I think almost 4 yrs ago now.

My onions did not do as well, but we got some and thats the goal. Learning as we're going.
