I love historical architecture and hotels! I review many hotels and historic properties for the Design and Development team prior to renovation, in order to identify all of the items that are not ADA and Florida Accessibility Code compliant, along with suggested solutions. I also review and answer questions throughout the drawing and specification process. I found these beautiful post renovation photos of the 1926 Key West La Co**ha Hotel on their website. Part of my review of the review was identifying non-accessible features like the reception counter, pool bar, main bar, other amenities, and which existing rooms are best suited structurally to become ADA mobility feature guest rooms. Here are the after photos showing the accessible bar seats with chair height seats are the accessible reception transaction counter. I apologize for not remembering the design firms name to give credit.

Converting a 1920's Mediterranean apartment building and a Craftsman style single family home into a Bed and Breakfast sounds like a dream, until the owner realizes that with the room capacity, they just created a new resort which must follow the 2010 ADA Design Standards, the 2012+ Florida Accessibility Code for Building Construction, provide mobility accessible rooms, provide communication accessible rooms, provide accessible parking, and assure that all amenities are accessible. Most importantly, everything must be connected on a continuous accessible route to all resort elements, the public sidewalk, and accessible parking.

Accessible parking and connected downtown accessible routes are essential for historical museums and funding. The 55+ crowd is more likely to visit and donate money. Many railroad stations throughout the USA are railroad and local history museums. This is the Winter Garden, Florida railroad museum. I look forward to posting the "after photos." I worked with the Winter Garden Museum team to review accessibility concerns and solutions. ADA compliance can be seamless. I'll post "after" photos when I have them. Some things are as simple as moving displays to create a clear accessible route or adding accessible route directional signs.
