Rooted in Memories

Rooted in Memories Sales will start in early September, so check back frequently. What is Rooted in Memories? Susan Wood never passed up a yard sale, auction or antique shop.

This is the place where the daughter & granddaughter of avid antiques collector Susan Wood share stories about her treasures & post details of upcoming sale events. For years, she bought -- and sold -- whatever caught her fancy: crystal goblets, vintage aprons, figurines, costume jewelry, lace tablecloths. She displayed her finds in her home & stocked her antique-mall booths & tiny antique shop. W

hen she died in 2020 at age 84, her house was overflowing with treasures. COVID-19 delayed our plans for clearing out the house with an estate sale. And when we revisited the process this year, we realized our focus had shifted. Previously, we'd thought we'd each (three children, five grandchildren & three great-grandchildren) pick out our favorite things, turn everything else over to an estate expert & walk away. But -- like many others -- quarantine forced us to reassess what's important & reevaluate how we do things. We had time to reflect & remember. And as life became (sort of normal) again, we knew we didn't simply want to clean out the house & sell the things. Instead, we wanted to honor & celebrate our mother & grandmother. We wanted to knowing more about the things she cared about before we shared them with others. So, we -- her granddaughter Carolyn Myers & her daughter, Cathy Wood -- made a plan. We'd go through the house, discovering the "whys" behind the objects: Is that dented English silver teapot really 300 years old? How did our young Victorian ancestor ever sit still long enough to create such intricate embroidery? What was that china platter used for? We'll research & share the stories, and we hope you'll share stories of your family treasures, in turn. As we explore, we'll host in-person sale events. This page is where we'll post sale details, so check back often & join us.

Wow! It's been a minute since we've updated -- it's taken that long to recover from our February sale. It was so much fun to see everybody & to know that the items our parents/grandparents collected & treasured were going to good homes. But we also learned that managing an estate sale is a job for the professionals! So we turned everything over to the best pros we know: Trent Poteat & his Tri-Star Estate Sales team. These Tullahoma folks are working countless hours to bring order to chaos -- the house looks amazing and items are accessible & clearly priced. Trent found so many pieces we'd never seen before -- if you love china, crystal, silver, collectibles or linens, you MUST come see what we've got.

If you collect Byers' Choice Carolers©, then you'll be at our sale this weekend because we have dozens. DOZENS. Our mom & grandmother Susan Wood loved the Carolers & added new ones to her collection every year. The story behind the company is fascinating & the handcrafted detail on the figures is stunning, so maybe if you're not a fan, you should start now. Check out the Byers' Choice story at https://www.byerschoice.com/ & then come see them for yourself!

In addition to our mom’s china & goblets & pitchers & such, we also have much of our dad’s John Deere memorabilia in the sale. He was with JD for most of his working life. He started as a “territory man” in the late 1950s, visiting dealerships as a wholesale rep. Then he bought into Tractor Service Co., the JD dealership in Manchester. I think that at the time, Tractor Service had both ag (the green farm tractors) & industrial equipment (the yellow logging & construction line). Later, he and his partner, Bill West, specialized in the industrial side. Cindy Slack West, am I remembering that correctly? Anyway, Dad collected all things John Deere—we’ve got the toy models & vintage promotional items & hats & decor & things I don’t even know what they are. So please come shop & help these treasures find new homes! Sale is 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 26 & 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 27. 1205 Lincoln St., Manchester, Tennessee.

Bragging on our new best friend Kirsten Smolensky, of Minerva Appraisal, in Nashville. If you're in middle Tennessee and need expert appraising done, try her first (she stays booked but the wait is worth it). Kirsten is part professional, part mental-health counselor & part antique-geek. Carolyn Myers & I loved every minute we spent with her. On our own, we were overwhelmed with the task we'd created for ourselves, but Kirsten made it manageable & fun. Plus, she is the hardest-working person I've ever met. "You're paying me by the hour," she said, when we'd beg her to stop & take a break, "so I've giving you every single minute." Because of her, we are confident that we're giving y'all the best estate-sale prices on our mom/grandmother's treasures. Come to the sale Feb. 26 & 27 to see for yourself & learn more about Minerva Appraisal at https://www.minervaappraisal.com/
