Olde Hermosa back in the 80’s was truly a quiet beach town. There were a handful of characters everyone knew of without people on social media complaining about them. They were just part of the local landscape. One of these characters were fella named Tarzan. Other people called him different things but I knew him as Tarzan and Robi Hutas had him labeled in this photo by the same name. Tarzan wore nothing but Speedo’s..no kidding, all year round. He was in a way celebrated by the community. He’s pictured here in Good Stuff Restaurants around 83’. I also remember Becker screen printing their logo on Speedo’s that he would wear giving them ad space on his ass.

This sign once hung on a two story duplex Ski and Surf shop on Artesia just East of Aviation. It was given to us as a gift from our bro Danial whose backyard was the spot we made the first prototypes. It was one long giant sign, so long we eventually had to cut it in 3 pieces to manage it.

It’s still alive and well housed in our studio inside Furnished + Beach Haus . When we’re all set up you and can come by and see this piece of South Bay history once again.

Flip was a South Bay kid that ended up working directly for Jerry Buss in the Laker organization. He lived across the walk street on 9th when we occupied a spot on the Birkenstock building (2015 -2020) Since he was so close to the Lakers a film maker tried to court him into spilling the beans on situations by having me make this sign for him. Nothing panned out for the filmmaker of course, but I however was paid to make something truly unique for Flips pad which I kid you not was full of Warhol’s and all sorts of signed Kobe stuff. I’d trip out that he’d have me over because in my estimation there was millions in artwork on the walls. But what do I know, I’m a graphic designer.

When I got the word my design was chosen for the Punk and Skate mural Flip was the first person I told since he lived right across the way. He immediately asked me to put his name on it and I was so stoked that I was doing it I agreed. So if you’ve ever been curious why it says Flip on the wall of the church in the mural it’s a nod to him being the first person who I told the good news of my concept being chosen for the Punk / Skate mural. Yeah he used the FLIP skate logo as his own…

One time at Barnacles he let me wear a Lakers championship ring. (I have to find that pic) He also gave me a couple of Jerry Buss’ business cards and a baseball signed by Kelly Slater.

The Hb beach towel ticket is an idea I came up with awhile back. I kept a couple for myself and my protege. Guess the City of Hb is strapped for cash and they don’t use yellow envelopes anymore. Also heard the cost of parking tickets is going up….again. Perhaps these will will return this holiday season as a gift option for that OG South Bay person in your life. Go jump in the water. - DI

Who’s house? Annie’s house. She’s got every variation of the Iron Man trophies I’ve made since they were cut with a jigsaw. As you can see for couple of years we strayed from the classic brown and yellow, but ultimately decided that coming up with a new design every year would eventually stray too far from the identity of Hermosa.

Robi gave me a flash drive of treasures one of which is a panoramic image of the 6 Man that he shot in 1979. If you have a large space to fill and love South Bay history, look no further. We printed this out on a 8ft piece of birch, but we can go bigger. Robi’s work needs to live on.
