This is the hardest post I’ve had to write, but alas, after almost 7 years, I have made the decision to close the shop.
Opening good bottle was truly a dream come true. I literally majored in retail in college a short 28 years ago. At the beginning of my senior year, my best friend and I went home to get some advice from my dad about opening our own store after graduation. We had no plan, no location, and no true idea of what it would be. We just knew we didn’t want to work for a big corporation and felt that after earning our degrees in Fashion Merchandising, we had the tools to run a store of our very own.
My dad knowingly told us to get real jobs in retail and come back in a couple of years. I took his advice and made many of my dreams come true in corporate America ... and actually really loved it. My friend became a teacher, so we took very different paths, but we’re still besties (hey Vanessa!!).
A refill shop was not the natural path for my shopkeeper dreams, but this idea came to me and I couldn’t let it go. If you have ever read the book Big Magic, it was truly a “Big Magic” situation.
Learning about living more sustainably was life-changing for me. Once I realized there were cleaner and cooler products out there beyond my mother’s Tide and Comet (which I came to see as just chemicals) I couldn’t imagine why anyone would still buy those brands. The refill shop concept made so much sense to me as someone who realized that plastic lives forever, and once I landed on the name of the shop, everything grew from there.
I am stepping away with so much pride in what my team and I have accomplished over the last almost 7 years. I am not someone who likes to list accolades or spend much time looking in the rearview mirror, but I truly cannot believe we did what we did... especially through the COVID years.
I wholeheartedly believe that a circular economy and shopping small are among the best ways a family can reduce consumption, cut down on single-use plastic, and truly make a difference. I do plan to keep the website going and focus on a curated selection of solid sustainable products.
Owning a refill shop is VERY hard work, and as my 48-year-old body pushes 30-gallon barrels of soap across the floor and unloads countless 5-gallon buckets out of my car, I find myself gravitating to solid options with no water content. (You know: Laundry detergent sheets, dish soap blocks, all-purpose spray tablets, and shampoo bars.)
So this is not goodbye forever. Over the next couple of months, I’ll be focusing on closing the shop and taking a little break before relaunching the website in a more curated and meaningful way.
Thank you to all the refillers and customers who have supported this small shop over the years. I have truly enjoyed every day of walking into my dream store and serving you. My team has been THE best in the biz, and the refill community has been incredibly supportive, inspiring, and welcoming.
I plan on stocking our best sellers until we close. Our last day open will be Sunday, June 21st (Father's Day). There will be no more deliveries to your doorstep, but there’s still plenty of time to head to the store to fill up (and stock up).
