On this day in 1871… history was printed. 📰✨

Published exactly on October 28, 1871, this original issue of Harper’s Weekly: A Journal of Civilization captures one of the most defining moments in American history: the aftermath of the Great Chicago Fire.

The powerful cover engraving, illustrated by C. S. Reinhart, depicts a somber group of refugees gathered in the streets as smoke billows across the ruined cityscape behind them. Before photography dominated mass media, woodblock engravings like this brought raw, unfiltered breaking news straight into Victorian living rooms. Holding a piece of history that survived over 150 years never fails to give us chills.

Come explore this incredible piece of ephemera and thousands of other unique historical treasures here at Big Shanty Antiques!
