A horse is a horse, of course. Back in 2020 a client asked if we could make reproductions of their 1960s rocking horse to give to their grandchildren. Fast forward to this year they asked for two more for their growing family. Fortunately we had saved the templates and were happy to make another set.

"I would love to have some storage in this corner." You've got it! We built and installed this 54-inch custom cabinet to the customer's exact specs. It was a fun build, and she was thrilled with the results.

This oak table and chairs have seen some love. And some miles. Purchased by the client's grandparents in Montana, it made its way with the family to Washington State. Decades later the family decided to relocate to West Virginia, and the dining set was one of the few things they brought along. With years of use and some stuck-on fuzz from a table cloth backer, it was ready for refinishing. We refinished the table and pedestal, along with six chairs and six leaves. The chairs were a mixture of oak and maple, so we used a two-step stain process to harmonize the two wood species. At the customer's request we kept the bite marks their son had left on the chairs when teething. The project turned out beautifully, and the family was happy to get the set in their new dining room (and see it featured here on the page!)

Wait, did she just say a throne?

That was my first thought when Ashley from Moonlight Intimate Apparel called me up. She did indeed have a throne. The leg had broken off during transit and she wanted a solid repair. We brought this magnificent piece into the shop and used marine epoxy to re-attach the leg, then added some dowels for extra strength. A little tough up paint and it was ready to host royalty once again.

Our customer's family heirloom desk had seen better days. With worn finish and water stains it was in a pretty sad state when she came in. We were all pleasantly surprised at how nice it came out after restoration.

"I want it glossy black, like the Prime Minister's door."

This entry door had seen better days and required some major wood repair. We pulled out all the stops and got her back together before the cold weather set in. We were able to source a marine finish that delivered the exact look the customer wanted!

This beautiful coffee table made her way home to Pittsburgh today! She was well-loved by her family and definitely ready for a new finish. We removed the old finish, along with some stains and scratches. We were able to achieve a beautiful teak tone that was just what the client wanted. For the added durability she desired we finished with several coats of General Finishes Arm-R-Seal and buffed it out to achieve a nice satin sheen.

These entry doors have come a long way! We love the way refinished red oak shines!

Back in 2019 we did a custom finish to update two dressers for a client who absolutely loved the final look. We ended up with two matching side tables left over in our inventory, and during a conversation last year we learned that she would love to have a vanity to go with the dressers. Working with the client we came up with a design that incorporated one of the side tables and a beautiful indistrial-style steel leg from Carolina Leg Co into this unique piece. It perfectly fits her space and matches the style and finish of the rest of the bedroom. The vanity went home this weekend, and soon we will be finishing a custom stool to go with the piece.

A Labor of Love

Renew is a labor of love where we showcase our combined talents to refinish and renew wood, metal, and other materials. A husband and wife team, we specialize in restoring, repairing and refinishing furniture and interior architecture. We offer contract refinishing services based at our shop in the Center Wheeling section of Wheeling, WV and serve Western Pennsylvania, East Ohio, and Northern West Virginia. Melissa Saville Holmes has been refinishing, renewing, and repurposing furniture and other home decor items since the first time she hauled a vanity out of a dumpster during her days at WVU, dragging it home to bring it back to life on the deck of her first apartment. Raised with a love and reverence for antiques in a home that once served as headquarters to Gen. Stonewall Jackson during the Civil War, Melissa is familiar with a wide range of furniture styles, materials, finishes, and repair techniques. Brandon Holmes began working under master carpenters at age 15, and has experience in nearly all aspects of home maintenance, repair, and construction. After a career in public policy, his love of unique and historic homes and buildings brought him back to Wheeling. He shares his skills at repairing, restoring, and refinishing furniture and architecture, along with making furniture from salvaged material. If you have an item or a part of your home that you would like to see renewed, message us here on Facebook, or text/call us at 304-780-0797 today! At Renew we are always learning and adding new skills and services. If you don't see the service you are looking for listed, just ask!
