Listen. Blacksmithing is one of the oldest trades on Earth, and you do not need a fancy setup to try it. So many people think you need lots of money to get started. You don't.

Here's all you actually need:

🔥 A hole in the ground
🪨 Some coal
🔧 A non-galvanized metal pipe
💨 A hair dryer you don't mind sacrificing
🔨 Two engineer's hammers from Harbor Freight

One hammer is your hammer. The other one is your anvil. Our ancestors figured this out, no Harbor Freight in sight.

🔨 Wondering what Blacksmithing 101 actually looks like? Here's the short version.

Three hours. We dig into equipment, technique, and work through some basic projects together. You go home with two completed pieces and enough knowledge to get started in the hobby.

It's a great starting point, whether you're having fun or getting serious. No experience needed.

🔨 People ask me why blacksmithing is a good activity for young people. And yeah, they learn how to work with metal and fire and tools. But that's not the whole point.

They learn tenacity. Because this is hard work.

They learn planning. Because every project requires you to think ahead.

They learn problem-solving. Because something will go sideways, and you have to figure out what to do next.

🔥 The next six-week blacksmithing course at Pellissippi State Community College is open, and I would love to have you in it.

If you've ever been curious about blacksmithing, this is a great place to start. We meet six Thursday evenings starting August 20th, 6 to 8 p.m., and by the end you'll have made a bottle opener, a Russian Rose, a coat rack, your own set of tongs, and a final project of your choice.

I'll walk you through equipment, tool technique, and all the fundamentals. No experience needed at all. Just come ready to learn something new.
