Mayor Daniel Pearl, Deputy Mayor Tina Schiaffino, Trustees Dana Durso, Todd Svec and Christine Wiss recently congratulated Massapequa Park resident Lula Koscheka who will be celebrating her 100th birthday!

Lula Koscheka, born on September 3, 1926, in Cleveland, Ohio. The daughter of Greek immigrants, she attended Kent State University where she studied Political Science, in addition to English, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree.

Following graduation, she was accepted for employment by the U.S. State Department where her first assignment was in Leopoldville, Belgian Congo attending to visitors and dignitaries alike. She was later transferred to Rio Di Janero, Brazil for a short time before being reassigned back to Leopoldville where she remained for many years. Lula always had a keen interest in foreign language, and it was during these years abroad that she became skilled in speaking four languages: Greek, French, German and Portuguese. During this time, Lula also met her husband Frank, a Pan American employee assigned there.

Together they raised five sons before moving to the United States in 1957 where they settled on Long Island in Massapequa Park. It was here that Lula worked as a copy editor for several local book publishers and newspapers including the Pennysaver among them. Lula and her husband Frank were blessed with another four children and years later she was even featured in Newsday with her son Frank Jr. showcasing her unique recipe known as "Muamba" that she enjoyed while living in the Belgian Congo.
