Transformation Part 2- swipe to see the before!

I’ve had a washable rug for years in our dining room and gifted me this one for the breakfast nook! It is a MUST for me to have a washable rug in an eating space and now I can’t wait for my kids to get pasta sauce all over this one so I can wash it! Just kidding…(maybe not?!)

Transformation Part I, done! All the details on stories today ❤️⠀

I haven’t shared a story a while, I think you’ll like this one:⠀

I grew up in a very conservative family. One of the absolute no-no’s was swearing (do you see where this story is going?). ⠀
⠀
When RJ and I bought our first house, we were living at an apartment complex and had to break our lease because it was in the middle of a year. I gave the leasing manager notice shortly before we moved out and she called my sweet husband in a huff, giving him grief over the phone, even though we intended to pay the penalty. I wasn’t about to let this afront go.

The leasing manager knew I was in law school so when I went to drop off our check, she was cowering in the back office and sent the receptionist out to meet me. As I was leaving, In ear shot of the leasing manager, I said loudly, “And make sure to tell your boss NEVER to speak to my husband like that again.” And I walked out to meet RJ in the car.

Oh but that leasing manager! She stormed out after me and started screaming at me in the parking lot. At the car, I turned around and shouted, “YOU’RE A B****!” And I got into the car and we drove away, leaving her stunned on the sidewalk.

I’m happy to report that I have not had to do that again so far in my life, but I guess you never know 🤷🏼‍♀️

It took us a billion tries to get this photo, but we really do laugh together all the time! We’ve been friends for over 13 years- we met on the track team at Grove City College, married guys from Ohio, and have lived close to each other since! ⠀

Does anyone else consider their patio holy ground in the summer time? One of our favorite parts of summer is spending a warm night out here, string lights on, sometimes turning a movie on (we mounted a tv outside last summer + it’s pretty wonderful!) Definitely our spot to recharge and relax. So go ahead and cue Rascal Flats ‘Summer Nights’ haha. I know that the end of August to September to fall shift is coming, but summer nights forever 🤍

My / inspired breakfast nook is coming along nicely and honestly I’m really enjoying the process. I thoroughly enjoyed myself making all of these cuts, figuring out how to get around the windows, outlets, etc. ⠀

As I’ve shared before, I’m really working on leaning into the concept that the process or the journey is the most valuable part! Changing my mindset to reflect that the journey is the destination ❤️

We added a new member to our family! ⠀

Things I want my kids to know that I didn’t: You don’t need everyone to like you.

I had very high anxiety as a kid (let’s be honest still do 🤷🏼‍♀️) but most of it was because I wasn’t taught to be confident in who I was and what I thought. In middle school, I came home from church youth group and told my mom that I felt like the leftovers in a refrigerator compared to everyone else who had friends and groups.

This plagued me until I sought counseling in college during a rough time. Sarah the counselor taught me about being confident in who I am and what I believed. That was a pivotal experience for me.

Truth be told, though, I’m still learning the life lesson that not everyone likes you and that’s ok! Just hope I can help my kids understand that sooner ❤️

This kitchen and I are about to get in some good quality time this afternoon! We’re having a small family birthday party for my boys tomorrow (turning 5 and 3 in August 😭) and I’m attempting to bake their cake this year! Will I regret this? Will my guests regret this? Haha. It can’t be thaaat hard to make a chocolate layer cake look like the surface of the moon, right? (Astronaut/outer space party btw 🌔) Share with me all your cake baking wins and losses!

I’ve slowly come to really know in life…

That the journey is the destination. Hear me out- this has been weighing heavily on me.

For example, when we went on a mini trip recently, we got stuck in traffic for 30 minutes on our way there. I realized that instead of being stressed about getting to our destination as soon as possible, that gave us an extra 30 minutes to talk and spend time together. Or last night when bedtime was a struggle, I soaked up the extra snuggles instead of trying to get everyone to sleep as soon as possible.

I now realize that whatever I see as a “destination” is usually an elusive and vague concept anyways. I miss out on the magic if I’m solely focused on whatever I think is the end goal.

Don’t get me wrong- sometimes the “journey” isn’t all that fun. But I usually find so much value in it looking back, and if my perspective was different I might have found the magic I didn’t think existed.
