If you’ve ever wondered, “How much would it cost to redesign my entire living room all at once?”, let me arm you with some information before you dive in.

It’s hard to imagine the total price for all of the furnishings in one 12’ x 14’ living room if you started from scratch.

That’s because there’s a really wide range of pricing, all the way from Target to Restoration Hardware. And that’s just retail. Custom-made pieces cost much more, but that’s a different topic for another post.

Today I’m sharing 3 ballpark retail budgets that you can use to gauge your own furniture budget. I compared the same types of items at each store: rug, chairs, sofa, ottoman, lamps, side tables, coffee table, window panels and hardware, TV console, artwork, accessories, and paint (32 items total).

Level One: if you were to shop at stores like Target, Ikea or Wayfair, you could spend a total of $4,395.00 for all of these furnishings.

Level Two: at mid-range retail chains like Pottery Barn, Crate & Barrel and Ballard Designs, you’d be looking at a bill around $15,260.00.

Level Three: high-end stores like Restoration Hardware, Room & Board and Arhaus will run you about $56,451.00 for the same types of items.

Surprising, yes?

Of course this brings up the question: “what accounts for the big differences between these budgets?”

The short answer is labor, quality of materials and scale.

Creating one piece of furniture takes many many hours of development, designing and building, and that’s just for the prototype. There’s extensive trial and error in this process to create an original design that will actually function and look attractive.

Huge amounts of care and attention go into making high-quality furniture. Artisans and top-notch furniture companies pay special attention to details like finishes, which take time and skill to execute. They use durable fabrics and hardwoods that last for decades. Expert joinery, bracing and support are also hallmarks of excellent craftsmanship. All of these factors add up to a very reliable piece of furniture.

On the flip side, big-box manufacturers have different goals in mind. They want to sell as many pieces as possible to as many people as possible. This means a much faster production rate, which means much less time is spent in the design, development and building stages. They rely on cheap materials like particle board, MDF, softwoods and melamine, and quite often use adhesives instead of bolts or nails. The focus on quick turn-over means using the simplest, fastest methods of construction, which don’t always equal longevity.

Another factor is scale. Large companies can produce and/or purchase vast quantities of furniture and therefore get deep discounts on their wholesale costs. This method just isn't available to smaller independent businesses that lack the budget and space for this type of purchasing.

Most of my clients end up mixing budget-friendly furnishings with a few investment pieces. This is a practical way to portion out your budget. And if you don’t need to buy everything at once, then collecting things over time helps to mitigate that sticker shock of a total room redesign.

By the way, the best investment pieces for your home are the sofa, your bed, and a dining set. With the right sofa, you can sit comfortably every day and make a style statement at the same time. Sleeping well is essential for healthy living, so invest in a high-quality bed frame and mattress. Your dining table and chairs endure mealtimes, homework, craft projects and social gatherings, just to name a few. Give your new set a head-start by choosing hardwoods and sturdy construction that will last for decades.

So how much would it cost to totally redesign your living room?

It all depends on how much you want to invest in your space. Only you can determine this, and hopefully I’ve given you some insight that leads you to the answer.

Do You Really Need a Costly Renovation to Update Your Home?

Even though we're seeing some improvements in the industry, interior designers are still coping with some inventory shortages. Prices have increased on so many things, including housing, building materials and fuel for shipping. If you're considering a home construction project, you'll need a big budget and plenty of patience in the face of these conditions.

Or... I've got 3 home updates you can do yourself, without waiting months to see the results.

Tip #1: Renew Each Room with a Fresh Coat of Paint
The simplest way to make a big change in your home? Paint! A fresh coat of a new color can revive any room in a jiffy. Dark and drab becomes fresh and fab just by swapping in a color that excites you today.

You can paint the entire room one color, or choose a neutral for three walls and a bolder shade for one accent wall. Another idea is to paint the walls and trim in the same color to give an expansive feeling in the space. And the ceiling offers another surface to play with. So many options with just one change!

Tip #2: Spruce Up Each Space with New Lighting & Hardware
What about the lighting and hardware in your room? These can date a home very quickly, but they're relatively easy to swap out for contemporary fixtures.

Let your favorite design style guide you to new cabinet pulls and fun lighting that express your personality. Since these pieces can be shiny and colorful, think of them like jewelry for your room. They add that stylish finishing touch.

There are lots of online sources where you can start your search, but seeing these items in person is even more inspiring. Find a local showroom that has lots of options so you can see what's available right now.

Tip #3: Adorn Each Area with Updated Window Treatments & Furniture
If your paint, hardware and lighting still light you up, then maybe it's time to focus on soft furnishings like window treatments and upholstery.

Take a look at the furniture you have today--is it in good enough condition to reupholster? How many pieces would this work for? If it's two or three big pieces, that opens up many more fabrics to choose from.

Replacing out-of-date window treatments also elevates your room. Refresh the area with new fabric, either in panels or on a valance. Layer a pair of sheers over a roller blind for softness and light-filtering capabilities. Fabrics give the perfect opportunity to make dramatic changes in your room without lifting a paintbrush.

With most home design projects, it's worth starting sooner rather than later to get a jump on delivery times and materials options. It’s so disappointing to find that the item you really want is on backorder, or worse, no longer available.

If you would like some support navigating smaller home upgrades like these, comment below because I’d love to help you. I’m all about making interior design more accessible to more people.

How to Style Your Bookshelves Without Spending a Dime.

Is your bookcase currently functional and fashionable, or is it a catch-all for the things that don't have a home? More often than not it’s the latter, and that's why I’m going to tell you exactly how you can take the existing items in your home from boring to well-designed in just a few hours.

Styling shelves and bookcases is similar to doing your hair (beyond the messy bun) or putting on a nicely curated outfit. It takes a short amount of time and effort compared to the big impact it has on the final aesthetic.

1.
CLEAR, CLEAN AND SORT
As with any styling project, remove everything from the area before you begin. Clear the shelves (dust them too - you know they need it) and sort the items into separate piles.

Place all books in one pile, decor and photo frames in another, and greenery and plant-life in a third pile. Set aside any other items that don't fit these categories; old receipts, yesterday’s mail, your cell phone charger and other pieces of technology that don’t belong on your bookcase.

2.
CHOOSE YOUR COLOR PALETTE AND AESTHETIC
Palettes and aesthetics are not synonymous. If your color palette is white, green, and warm neutrals, will you interpret it as farmhouse country, boho chic, or modern traditional? Any of these are possible with that color palette, so you need to be deliberate with the design style you want to create.

With two or three colors in mind and a design style leading the way, choose several pieces in at least one of your chosen colors that represent the following elements and materials:

wood (pine cones, branches, greenery, flowers etc.),

metals (bronze, stainless, rose gold, etc.),

fire (candles, electric lighting, orange and red),

earth (landscapes, baskets, crystals, neutral tones),

water (clear or colored glass, mirrors, blue and black).

3.
CREATE ECLECTICALLY
Place all of your items next to each other and take a step back. Which ones look good together? Remove those that don't seem to belong, then take an item from each category and make odd-numbered groups. Place each group of items on its own shelf.

Step back and look at each shelf or bookcase objectively. You may need to shift a few pieces around or adjust the spacing. Compare height, width, color and shape of the items. Do they achieve a pleasant balance as a group?

Keep going with this process for each shelf until they’re all visually interesting and delightful to you.

Now your home is a showcase of your tasteful curation skills, and you didn't have to buy anything new!

Hi Everyone, I want to remind you that the Maynard Farmers Market opens this Saturday!

It’s such an exciting time of year, and the Market is one of my favorite signs of Summer. Along with a variety of great vendors, I’ll be at my booth and ready to chat about all things interior design!

Wait, what?

I know, it sounds weird for a designer to be there, but here’s the thing: the Maynard Farmers Market includes some local businesses and organizations too, as well as amazing local produce, baked goods, honey, coffee, maple syrup, lots of hand-crafted products, kid’s activities and even live music, thanks to a generous grant from the Maynard Cultural Council. It’s a cool, community atmosphere, and I’m so grateful to be included.

No, I don’t sell anything at my booth. The reason I’m there is to meet people and let them know I’m here in Maynard to serve them. That’s it, no sales pitches. I just love talking about interior design, and meeting up with old and new friends who love it too.

So come and join us at the Maynard Farmers Market this Saturday the 24th. When you’ve finished shopping, stop by my Groovyhome booth and take a seat. Bring a design question that’s puzzling you and we’ll chat about it. There’s also a color trivia game you can play, and handy tip sheets for using color in your home.

I hope to see you there!

How Can We Save The Earth? Try Sustainable Interior Design

There’s so much about the interior design industry that’s not sustainable–fast furniture, toxic materials, deforestation, and massive fuel consumption to name a few.

I’m certainly guilty of buying cheaply-made things myself, being seduced by ‘quick ship’ and low price tags. But my cheap coffee table takes its toll on our planet, and everyone is paying dearly for the convenience.

It’s a scary scene, but there is hope. We all have the power to change our shopping habits.

>>The Downside of Fast Furniture
In general, furniture is the least-recycled home product. Most cheap furniture is made from particleboard, which is a collection of wood scraps that’s processed and pressed into sheets with formaldehyde-laden glue. This stuff contains a known carcinogen (off-gassing into our air), it takes tons of water and energy to produce, and it doesn’t break down in a landfill.

Once the particleboard is manufactured using tons of water and energy, it’s made into ‘furniture’ in high-polluting factories and then shipped all over the world using fossil fuels. Ultimately, we end up paying for these things with our health and our environment.

This means that my cheap coffee table literally costs the Earth.

Compelling, isn’t it??

>>Here’s Some Hope: Repurposing
One way I address sustainability in my business is to repurpose furniture pieces that still function.

Can we refinish, reupholster, or repaint something to extend its life in the new design? Can we shift pieces around the house to maximize their potential? Can we buy second hand items that fit into the scheme instead of buying new?

I always discuss these possibilities with my clients and they appreciate the fact that I don’t insist on a ‘clean slate’ to work with. I want to keep the character of my clients’ homes, and that includes heirlooms and special pieces that hold meaning for them and their families.

>>Here’s More Hope: Existing Space
Another way I approach sustainability is to redesign my clients’ existing spaces.

What’s quirky and unique about the room they already have? What qualities have my clients overlooked? What can we highlight with a new design?

I don’t recommend renovating because it adds so much waste to our ever-expanding landfills.

From the EPA’s 2018 Fact Sheet:
“600 million tons of C&D (construction & demolition) debris were generated in the United States in 2018, which is more than twice the amount of generated municipal solid waste.

Demolition represents more than 90 percent of total C&D debris generation, while construction represents less than 10 percent.

Just over 455 million tons of C&D debris were directed to next use and just under 145 million tons were sent to landfills.

Aggregate was the main next use for the materials in the C&D debris.”

>>Let’s Not Make It Worse
So how do we live a more sustainable life at home with our furnishings?

Here’s the short list:
Repurpose what you have.
Buy local.
Buy second hand furniture.

When buying new or new-to-you, consider these sources:
~~Chairish and Kaiyo for second hand furniture online.
~~eBay and Etsy Reclaimed for furniture and decor online.
~~Medley, Burrow, The Citizenry and Urban Wood Goods for sustainable and recycled furniture online.
~~FaceBook Marketplace and Craigslist for local items.
~~Your mom’s or grandma’s attic.
~~Local shops near your home.

Yes, the state of our planet is frightening. We all contribute to it. And all of us can play a part in redressing the balance by taking these simple action steps: repurpose, think locally, and buy second hand goods.

On Wednesday May 10th at 6:30pm I'm hosting a free 1-hour workshop:

* Peaceful Spaces Workshop: Balance Your Home with Color & Feng Shui*
at Everybody In Mind Wellness Center in Sudbury, MA.

If the state of your home is one of those things that you feel you should pay more attention to but don’t really know where to start, this could be for you.

As an interior designer, I know the importance of living in a home that supports us emotionally and physically. I believe that when our environment aligns with who we are, we feel happier and more empowered.

Everything we look at everyday–colors, furniture, flooring, lighting–has a direct effect on our wellbeing. And seeing the same old colors and outdated decor has much more of a negative impact on our mood than we might realize.

In this in-person class, I share simple and affordable ideas for using color in your home to begin transforming your space into a nurturing environment that can bring more peace into your life.

We’ll explore:
*The effects of color in our environment
*Color schemes based on Feng Shui principles
*How interior design and Feng Shui run parallel to each other
*Examples of specific color palettes within a fun group activity.

This is for people who–
*Feel like the state of their homes is out of date and stressful.
*Want simple and affordable ways to shift their home’s energy into a peaceful vibe.
*Love how others decorate with color, but feel afraid of making a big mistake in their own home.

You’ll leave with tips and inspiration, mistakes to avoid, and ways to use color intentionally to foster a greater sense of peace and harmony in your home.

This workshop is graciously hosted by Carla Chalah, a certified Hypnotherapist, an Integrative Life Coach and the owner of EveryBody in Mind Wellness Center in Sudbury, MA.

Hi Friends, here’s my latest blog post!

👉 How Your Home Makes You Feel & Why Color Plays a Key Role 🎨

Have you ever walked into a room and suddenly felt energized, comforted, or soothed? Chances are, color played a big part in your reaction.

Studies have shown that color has a direct impact on our emotions, via the way we physically see colors, and through our personal history and experiences with them.

On the blog this time, I'm sharing how three different color palettes can influence our mood and energy at home.

Creating Cozy, Comfortable, Yet Colorful Rooms

We've seen a shift in popular colors recently, veering into reds and warm earthy neutrals like sand, copper and brown. These shades are easy to live with, they’re softer than gray, and they dial up the warmth. I think colors like pale peach, terra cotta and coffee bring on a really cozy vibe right now.

This palette is inviting and welcoming, so any sort of breakfast nook or reading corner, guest bedroom or study would be smashing in these colors. Check out the warm cozy landing in the photo here.

Evoking Emotion While Infusing Impact & Energy

Spaces with focused activities like socializing, cooking or working can handle a brighter palette. Highly-saturated colors tend to spark energy within us and we feel like getting things done. Classic red, blue and yellow definitely raise the vibration in a room because of their intensity.

Try choosing one of your favorite bold colors and pairing it with its complementary color to make an impact in your decor.

Soothing a Space with Less Saturated, Subtle Shades

On the other hand, pale colors tend to relax us. I love sleeping in our bedroom because its pale blue walls are really soothing to me. Soft sage and light leafy greens also radiate a sense of calm, which is so necessary at the end of the day. If you like to sleep in a cool room, this pale palette is a great option for you.

I also love tinted whites in a bedroom, like the very palest pink or purple, because they’re clean, light and airy with just a wisp of color. Very restful.

Color and emotion are linked at the subconscious level. We see colors and we respond to them according to our culture, experience and situation. There's no right or wrong to that, it’s totally personal. The trick is to align your color responses with how you want to feel in the room, and go from there.

If you enjoyed these color tips and want more advice you can use in your home, you'll really love my newsletter!
