Experiencing gapping or “cracks” at the edges of your hardwoods?

hygroscopic materials absorb and release moisture from the surrounding air until they reach equilibrium with ambient relative humidity (RH) and temperature. Wood is hygroscopic.

Why it matters for flooring: changes in wood moisture cause dimensional changes (swelling when gaining moisture, shrinking when losing it). Those movements produce gaps in dry seasons and cupping or buckling in wet seasons.

Environmental control (ongoing)

• Keep indoor relative humidity 35–55% year‑round (ideal 40–50%). Use humidifiers in dry winters and dehumidifiers/AC in humid summers.

• Maintain stable indoor temperature (typical home range: 60–80°F). Rapid swings worsen movement.

Short Term Solutions:

Color matching filler may be added.
Humidifiers to bring humidity into acceptable levels.

If you have new, solid hardwood floors, you’ll see gapping more prevalent in this first year (4 seasons). If you’re experiencing gapping now, they will close up when humidity comes back, like in the spring and summer seasons.

McKinney Square we love you!

Right off the square, this couple reached out for the second time to have their floors repaired!

A big leak under the house destroyed their hardwoods and left them cupped and soaking wet.

Our team tore out, replaced subfloor and hardwoods. Then laced them back into the existing hardwoods we had already finished years ago.

A custom mixed stain was applied with our favorite satin finish.
