For as long as I can remember, visual arts has been what makes my heart beat fast. Abstract color is what I dream about night after night. Working to create an environment that is aesthetically moving, while successfully functioning is something that I have endless mental energy for, often long after my physical energy has been depleted. Searching for the right way to release a specific emotion through visual elements and environment is deeply engrossing, and deeply fulfilling to me in a way that few other things are. Sunday Inspo in my favorite sunny spot.

I’ve always loved art history and did an emphasis in it during school. While not terribly unique, Monet and Renoir have been my favorites for as long as I can remember.

I’ve recently been reading a journal of entries written back and forth between many of the well known impressionist painters (that no one thought were talented at the time). Bless.

But my most deeply amusing new obsession is this book called “Monet’s House” that discusses his theories on interior design and how deliberately he slowly built his estate from the years of being dirt poor to finally seeing some success.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST please note that he and I share the same favorite colors (coral and green on second page) 🤷‍♀️💁‍♀️😂 and that he too supported the color drench method when done right-even all those years ago. 💛

This Dallas home was a true custom build by the original Owners, who our Client’s bought the house from. It was filled with years and years of wild treasures and art (more on the before shots soon ).

I remember walking through the house before they purchased it—analyzing ideas with them and noticing that even with so many layers filling it over the years, it still had this beautiful natural light floating throughout the house.

That meant our job was to come in and simply honor those bones. We redid the full electrical plan both functionally and aesthetically to work for the new Owners. Then added a lot of ambient light with as few harsh overhead cans as possible and everything on dimmers. As well as outlets and switches in places that felt second nature in any where it was doable. And some sexy brass ones to my delight 🎉

So now I kind of have to smile when every spot I look at, there is a picturesque shadow staring back at me. It almost feels like maybe that beautiful new old house is whispering its approval with every flicker. ✨

6. Cabinet face style (shaker with recessed panel and beaded edges)

7. Cabinet foot details

8. Where to add in cabinet towers for appliances and a coffee station (cabinetry took 4 rounds of editing construction drawings to make sure the owner loved every bit!)

9. How many shelves are inside the tower

10. How much space between each shelf to fit the type of storage the Client needed (they chose adjustable)

11. Cabinet paint color

12. Paint sheen / Level of product

13. Backsplash tile (to fit with a historic home in a refreshed way while holding up next to heat)

14. Grout color (contrast enough to see the tile, without being too busy, in a pre-lived in color for longevity)

15. Hardware style

16. Hardware layout and size (it’s functional jewelry-make it count)

17. Hardware finish that with tones (and undertones) that mixed well with other metals in the space and will age well (polished nickel)

18. If we should refinish the wood floors (yes)

19. Floor stain color (custom)

20. And of course—before anything was done, we looked carefully at the investment level the Owners felt comfortable at overall & for each spot (we know exactly how to guide you on what is worth investment and what could be allotted elsewhere more wisely).

I THINK IVE MADE MY POINT 🤣 This list is the tip of the iceberg. There are multiple other choices that went into the kitchen, starting with the brilliant Engineers+Arch team.

75% of these choices were made before we broke ground—-which equals no panic.

Moodboard Monday with no shortage of Palm Beach+ Terra Cotta+Schumacher+ 80’s vibes floating around as we enter summer.

I’m loving the place we are in in the design and fashion industry. Brimming with color! More and more people are becoming less afraid of using color in their home and I’m so proud!

We have three new ‘al la carte’ services being piloted for summer starting June 1st, that I’m so excited about. Sharing in stories soon. ⛱️

In the mean time, my cute kids get out of school in 2.5 days and I’m both thrilled and slightly terrified. They’re in their first “I’m so bored phase” season of life. Only takes about 90 MINUTES for them to finally get creative and start playing make believe. Worth it to see them in that mode——but GOD SPEED DURING THE WHINING.🤣🤣🤣

What a transformation this historic Dallas home has been through! So much history, so many technical details to figure out with our Architect+Engineers and Builder so that we could raise ceilings and move loads safely, within the numbers projected, and within constraints of the strict historic district. 😅

The Client’s specifically bought this home instead of some of the other M street homes that were already renovated so that they could make it exactly how they wanted throughout out the design and Reno process.
I went with them before it was even purchased and walked through. It is now nearly unrecognizable aside from the charming historic notes that were left in tact.

The home owner’s style is a hint glamorous and moody, a few layers of antique delight, blended with the clean and slightly more modern feel you see above. And of course, their favorite color is blue 💙

We’ll be sharing more about this home as we share the other rooms in the next few weeks—but this breath of fresh air from a once teeeeeny tiny bathroom (that we gutted down to the rafters) makes me smile every time I see it.
